  2. I've just heaved down my copy of the OED, and have to concede that you are
    more than half right. Apropos is the primary spelling in bold type, but a
    [that's a grave accent, BTW, not an acute] propos is given as a valid
    variant. In the examples from literature there is even a third version -
    a-propos.

  3. It's not French (as used in English), it's of _French_origin_. Just as
    'role' written with the accent, as in French: 'rôle', or 'fait accompli'
    (which, _stricto_senso_ means nothing in English), or 'fête', or
    whatever, the two are accepted.

    TOG has been known to **** French up the back passage, but on this
    occasion, he's right.
