Only 5mph off the maglev record.

If only they ran them between Maidenhead and Tower Hill, I'd be
    laughing...

pretty impressive really, given the age of the TGV concept.
crashing, more like, I'd have thought.

Shinkansen 500, now *there*'s an overpowered crazy-looking train.

What, on a route via Kensal Rise and Ladbroke Grove?

How could it *possibly* go wrong?

the 700's even madder. Not particularly fast in the context of this
    TGV test, mind.

The 700's cheaper and slower. Looks a bit mad, but nowhere near as funky
    as the 500.

The buffers at Paddington might be a bit of a ****.

    Extreme trainsurfing anyone ?

I guess you'd need better vacuum cups than the £6.99 ones in the local
    DIY store.

Last week, they did a speed test of 549kph, but it's nice to know that
they've bettered that. It's not a speed that they'll use every day on
the new line to Strasbourg from Paris though, as it's very expensive to
run at speeds like that all the time (as you well know).

It's always nice to see the French in their constant competition with
    the Japanese too.

Or maybe they have different trees in France?

News reports reckoned 25000bhp for the whole thing.

Wikipedia reckons the Shinkansen 500 makes 25000bhp _per_ _car_, and it
has 16 powered cars. Now *that*'s what I call grunty.

Champ banged the rocks together and they said :
    <from Wikepedia>

    "
The Milwaukee Road class EP-2 (1918) weighed 240 t, with a power of
    3,330 kW and a maximum speed of 112 km/h
    "

So 90 years ago, ~1/6th the power, ~1/5th the speed.

I'm amazed that there are electric motors that can consume that sort of
    power without exploding in 0.00001s.

    Comment from rwdrift:
Wow, blow things out of proportion why wont you. You can clearly see
that the railroad tracks are the conventional train tracks and not the
ones used to go 300km/h. Anyone that's been in Germany knows that the
InterCity Express trains cruise like any regular train. There's only a
few sections of railroad there the train can actually go balls out,
and it's usually from one main city to the other.
