So where do electric assisted bicycles fall in then Eh? I've never seen the
    manufacturers quoting those requirements.

  2. Fairy nuff. I was referring back to someone ele's reference to
pavements. I just thought your statement that you needed no licence,
insurance etc meant that you could ride one on public roads without all
    that gubbins....

  3. IIRC you have to be aged 14 to ride them, and I *think* you need
    insurance. That's it, though.

Where's JP when you need him?

I don't think you require insurance, provided it is limited to less
than a certain output, around 200W and a max speed under power of no
    more than 15mph.

Not an authority, but good enough?

Cheers peeps. I thought for a while I'd still get my kicks but on the
cheap. The consensus seems to be to buy a bicycle, good advice that I'd
    completely overlooked!

Swot I thought. There was something in the papers, years ago, about an
electric bike. At the time, they said that the bike would needed to
have been registered, MOTed, taxed, etc, etc and you'd have to wear a
    lid.

I think this guy is right, i asked the local plod about a 25cc goped and was
told i needed insurance the lot, and if i used it home from the pub i would
get dun like a kipper. There is some information on the Gov web sites (go
google) about the laws, something to do with outputs if i remember, my 15
yera old daughter wanted one as well untill she asked about insurance,
    that put her off.

But then again, on private ground it's ok for a 12year old to drive a
Chieftain tank, artic or whatever else takes their fancy.

There *is* no dividing line. If you use a mechanically propelled
vehicle on UK roads, then it must conform to all the construction &
use regs for its class (two, three, four or more wheels), and you must
have insurance and (if applicable) road tax/MoT.

Engine capacity has nowt to do with it (beyond the proviso that under
50cc is usually - but not always - classified as a moped). You just
aren't allowed to use these things on public highways, and that's it.

I thought they were still completely illegal to use on public roads,
    though?

  14. There isn't a speed limit on those. Well, they've just introduced one
in the mall in MK. It was on the news last night. fascinating. If you
hire a Shopmobility motorised wheelchair, they're restricted to 4mph,
but if you're not a pikey and bring your own, yours might be able to
reach 8mph. And as they pointed out, you can do a marathon in 3 and a
    quarter hours at that rate!

Also on the news last night was a silly season feature, showing a
bloke who has grafted a 100cc motor into a shopping trolley. He sits
in the wire basket and controls it with a set of modified pushbike
handlebars. He reckons on going for a Book Of Records entry, as it
will do 40 mph ... although he had a leetle deeficulty stopping last
    night ;-)

**** that, I'll bung a Bandit 12 motor in one of Tesco's finest and go
for it - should be good for 150 with the right gearing ...

    Here!
Gopeds are no different to mopeds and require all the same
    requirements.
Electrically assisted pedal cycles (electrically assisted pedal cycle
regs 1983) are defined as fitted with pedals, kerbside weight less
than 40kg, motor cuts out above 15mph and power output not exceeding
0.2kw (0.25kw for a tandem) and have to have their power output plated
on it. You have to be 14years to ride one.
They are specifically *not* to be classed as motorvehicles (but are
still mechanically propelled). That means that you still have to abide
by road traffic law (as you would on a bicycle) but you still come
under a lot of other road traffic law (such as unfit to drive,
dangerous driving and requirements if you have an accident except for
    insurance)
