Go on, scare me...

Something I've not looked into (so far) whilst dipping a toe into the murky
world of motorcycling, is the cost of insurance.

It dawned on me the other day that I will, of course, be starting with no
    NCB to ease the pain.

I'm in my mid-50's, only one SP30 on my licence (& no bans etc), live in a
non-pikey neighbourhood, bike would be in garage and bikewise I might be
looking at something retro like an second-hand Enfield Bullet. Bike would
    be for pleasure use only.

Is insurance going to hurt, or hurt a lot? ;-) Any ball park figures from
other similar newcomers to the dark side? Sould I seriously consider a
smaller engined bike for the first year or so to get my NCB down?

Why not do some online quotes and find out?

I reckon it will only hurt, not hurt a lot. It's 20-year-olds who try and
insure things like R1s and R6s that end up with the truly stupid quotes.

I only tried one but it didn't give a real-time online quote so I assumed
    that most were like that.
Any particular recommended companies (or ones to avoid)?

  4. It has oft been said, "If you have to ask the price, motorcycling ain't
    for you."

In my terms, outrageous to frankly taking the piss but then I again I
still possess a paper licence and only ever bother the breakdown part of
    my insurance.

Absolutely not. The biggest one you can pick up and then some.

I'd expect a retro style bike such as the Enfield, modern day Triumph
Bonnie or Kawasaki W650 would cost you next to feck all to insure, even
    as a new rider.

eBike (http://ebikeinsurance.co.uk/) are cheap for some but not others
and will certainly give you a full quote once you've put in your
    details.

If it's a standard bike with no modifications there are lots of
others. Google 'motorcycle insurance on-line quote' to be presented
with a selection to choose from.

for an Enfield, probably the running cost of keeping it on the road
will far outstrip the insurance costs.

**** it, buy what you want - in my 3rd year of biking, I bought a
Bandit 1200 - it cost **** all to insure, even though I was "only" 31,
and the bike was ungaraged, within the M25.

IME (though for a car, not a bike) it's when you make a (theft and
hefty repair bill) claim that your premiums go mental, despite having
    had NCB protection.

  9. I have had more than I consider pleasurable claims for theft and not
noticed any penalty. Mind you they were far enough apart to avoid any
totting up process affecting my NCB protection, which may have made a
    difference.

you misunderstand - my NCB has in theory not been reduced, just that
my insurers have seen fit to increase my premium by 50% anyway (and
they were still the best quotes on the various comparison sites).
    Inscos suck.

Neither probably. L insured her SV650 for not a lot when she passed her
test. Being old rocks (in some ways).

Hmm, I think it'll have to wait until I've got a bike because life is just
too short to fill in one of these on-line forms without having specific bike
    details.

    Some reliability issues then? ;-)

Not that I mind that much as I *want* something that I can tinker with (and
is still tinkerable). Most modern bikes look awfully like "dealer
    serviceable only" items to me.

Things without full fairings then. Parallel/flat twins ideally, or singles.
    Without EFI.

    Mine.

I've not ridden for 20 years so have no bike NCB (but have car)
    Passed my bike test 1984
    I'm mid (*cough*) 40's

Bike cheapo 1985 Honda CBX 750F
Kept at the front of the house with a no brand security padlock.

Fully comp is £149.00 with swindle bike insurance.

Could have probably gotten a tad cheaper if I'd spent time shopping around
    but I got bored.

HTH - it probably doesn't but hey ho!

    Cheers

It just so happens I have a very nice Enfield Bullet 500 with full Cafe
Racer conversion residing in one of my garages, that I know the only
owner from new is interested in selling. Mail me at the address in my
headers if you want more info and/or photos.

It looks pretty much the same as this one

I wouldn't have moaned about the capital letters if I'd known it was
    one of those things.

They are not to be referred to simply as "my CBX".
Leaving the 750 off is deceitful, at best.
