Glowing header pipes ZX9

  1. Are you living in the dark ages? The cam is sprayed with water from
    the saddle tanks.
    I doubt that.
    You'll make yourself dizzy again.

  3. It's a plain ordinary tap on the ZX9.

  4. That could well be it then. Surprised it's so old-fashioned, to be
    honest.

It is quite similar, in a not-really-anything-like-it-at-all way.

The thing you need to know is if it's castor based [1]. If so, don't go
using any other oil without cleaning out the whole system first. It's a
bit like mixing DoT5 brake fluid with DoT4/5.1 - nasty things happen.

[1] That doesn't mean it's got little wheels on the bottom of the
    bottle.

Ahh, that'd be the old semi synth not mixing with fully synth thang then.

One of my lad's mates runs his 'prilly RS125 on fully synth. He completely
    flushed out the system first.

Not really, it's more the castor-based not mixing with anything else,
regardless of its synthness thang. It doesn't fall into any of the
usual camps (mineral, semi-synth or synth) - it lives in its own
    special little world.

  10. No it's not that at all. Semi synth and fully synth will mix perfectly
well. Castor is a vegetable oil and wont mix with a mineral (or
    synthetic mineral) oil.
I bet he had a lovely day doing that.

  11. What makes you think that the world of vegetables is little? Have you
not looked at the postings in this group lately?

Heh, I was going to say Castrol R is the Des of 2T oils - but I doubt
    Des smells that nice.

I think the smell alone is worth an increase in engine rebuilds.
Unfortunately the engine in my 2-smoke is made of unobtanium, so its
first blow-up will also be its last, hence it lives on Putoline MX5.

Interesting stuff, I didn't know that.
Apparently it wasn't too bad. He reported that the fully synth was much
thinner than the semi, which I thought odd at the time.

  15. Have you never looked over a hedge while riding and wondered what those
things growing are? Some of them will have been castor plants.
Just different viscosity. Nothing too odd about that. Have you ever
compared gear oil to engine oil and noticed the difference?

Given your new job, give me a shout if you ever want to do something on
Vincents & I'll put you in touch with daddy.

  19. It's not a new job, as such - I'm freelance. But yes, thanks, post filed
for reference. Why - has your Pa got a collection or something?

He's regarded as a bit of an expert - probably 'the' expert. He used to
race, sprint & trial Vinnies, & has been restoring & modifying them for
over 50 years. The family business is the world's biggest Vincent parts
supplier, & he was technical director of the Vincent Owners Club for a
    number of years.

He has got a bit of a collection, including a Gray Flash. Mum's got a
    Black Knight, & brother's got a show-winning Comet & is building an
Egli racer. I'm the black sheep of the family ;-)
