Gixxer vs ZX10r - Opinion

It's time for my Gixxer thou and I to finally part company. We have spent a
fond four and three quarter years together. I really love the bike but it's
now time to find something a bit physically smaller. I've sat on the current
crop of litre sportbikes and they all feel small compared to my K1 Gixxer
with the exception of the RSV which I loved but was far too tall. So what's
    the truth?

I have done a google search to see if there's a report from Champ but couldn't
find one. My only disappointment with my Gixxer was some niggly quality of
finish issues but these paled into insignificance when compared to the total
package. Also, when my engine went they sorted it out and paid for all the
parts even though it was well out of warranty. Tyre life was probably what
you expect from a hamfisted pilot as was fuel consumption. My best was
almost 60mpg and my worse was less than a Range Rover. The average being
about 25mpg. For some reason I seemed to wear out the front tyre at a
similar rate as the rear [2], the lowest mileage a got was 800 miles on a
set of Rennsports [3] but never bettered 2,000, even in winter. One
remarkable thing about the Gixxer was how comfortable it was, even though I
never attempted the mileages that some riders here managed I did frequently
do more than 500 miles per day. I remember that after one return journey to
Swansea and back [1] it was such a lovely evening I went out for a ride.

So how does the current crop compare. FYI, I'm 5'3" and just over 9st.

    [1] 470 miles
[2] Well close enough to change them both.
[3] By far the best tyres I used in the dry but I found them unpredictable
    in the wet (hamfisted).

I just don't have the strength to hold a tall bike up and actually dropped
the Gixxer when my foot slipped on gravel. An extra inch would have made all
the difference. Obviously when on the move the size doesn't matter but the
reality of life is you have to be able to plant a toe firmly.
Cheers Champ, that's just what I needed, I don't know about the Blade though
but it's certainly worth blagging a test ride.

  3. From what I understand the K% is a lot lower down or the seat is narrower
at the front so your feet can reach the ground.

I found Daz's K5 to be a lot lower than my K1 when I sat on it. I
thought this was because I have modified rear suspension[1] but after
fitting the standard shock back into mine, while the Maxton was away
being rebuilt, I found it even higher than it was before. Overall, I'd
say as standard the K5 is lots lower than a K1, but the K5 seat is like
    a plank.

[1] Shorter dog-bones which raise the rear and Maxton shock.

A custom seat from Corbin would give you an inch or so lower too.

  8. I've sat on both the 10R and the Gixer K4 & K5 and the K5 is
significantly lower than the other two. I can almost flat foot the K5
whereas the others I'm definitely on tippy toe.

That's encouraging, you're a bit taller than me but not much. Saying that,
    "Triumph 955iSS / ZX9R / GSF1200 bandit " all these are a bit tall for me.

Good idea. I'm playing at the White Horse tomorrow and you're not too far
    from there.

    I've owned a K2 and K5. As you can ride a K2 you'll be fine on the K5
as it's a lot smaller and lighter The lower height mainly comes from
the much reduced width of the seat. The seat isn't a plank at all,
seriously. The K2 seat is *sumptuous*, which I think is why Loz
    noticed such a difference.

Perhaps I could pop over to your house first. [1] I usually get there about
8:15 to set some equipment up. I'll only be doing 4 or 5 numbers because I'm
still a bit poorly. I usually do a lot more but I'll have to see how it
goes. I'll probably use my acoustic 12-string and mic it up. I may also sing
two originals I wrote while in hospital. It really depends on how I feel, I
had a tube stuck down my throat for 10 hours and I'm still a bit sore.

[1] Mail me your address again please.
