In this month's Australian Motorcycle News there a good article on a
    GSXR1000 v Porsche Turbo S at Wakefield.
No points for guessing who wins. Apparently the car boys were represented by
Motor magazine, so I'd like to read their excuses...

I baught Motor Magazine just for that artical, But haven't yet read it. The
diff would have been bigger though if there was a racer on the bike as it
    there was in the Porsche.

Mmm and they had a pro racer at the helm of the Porsche and Sam
McLachlan (who, while he's proven himself capable by winning, isn't
anywhere near being a pro racer)

Sorta like the one done ~15+ yrs ago with the GPZ900 and the BMW (A
CAR ONLY A TRUE PROFESSIONAL DARE DRIVE or similar to that)..

I liked the pics of the front brake rotor of the Porsche and the pic of
the bike next to each with the comment they had the same value...

    JL
(ceramic rotors - an 18K option on the Porsche)

I happened to read the MOTOR version before reaqding the AMCN version
and in MOTOR they admitted that the brake upgrade for the porsche was
actually $40 more than the bike. They then went on to claim that even
with a professional rider on the bike, their would have only been
another second in it, yet the superbike record for that track was
stated as something under 60 seconds. Seems that with an "equivalent"
rider on the bike, the bike would have been about 5-7 seconds faster.

    Regards

    No, because it's not a superbike - it's a roadbike

there may be a few of seconds in it with someone like Gilesy rather than
Sam, but it ain't going to equal the Superbike lap record for all the
    obvious reasons.

How old is the record at Wakefiled for supers? I wouldn't have thought
it was very recent? (was curious when I read the article).

The other interesting point was that the track is not considered favourable
    to bikes.
Does anyone know of similar comparisons on other tracks?

the interesting entries there seem to me to be:

125cc GP Class Paul Campbell (125 Honda RS) 1:05.3300 07/04/2002
250cc GP Class Jay Taylor (250 Honda RS) 1:04.6900 07/04/2002
    Prod Superbikes Murray Clarke (1000 Yamaha R1) 1:03.4900 04/03/2001
Bears Michael Soderland (916 Ducati SP) 1:03.2200 04/03/2001
Superbikes Ian Hambridge (900 Honda CBR) 1:03.0000 04/03/2001
Super Sport Russell Holland (600 Suzuki) 1:02.6000 07/04/2002
Formula Xtreme Joshua Brookes (929 Honda) 1:01.9200 07/04/2002

Prod Sports Cars A Bill Pye (Porsche GT3) 1:02.1825 06/07/2003
Nations Cup G1 John Bowe (Ferrari 360 GT) 0:58.9346 01/06/2003
Mirage Series Warren Luff (Mitsubishi Mirage) 1:10.0956 29/10/2000

(I threw that last one in 'cause it seemed interesting to me that Luff
actually held a lap record at the track)

These are a little out of date though, 'cause the superbikes raced there
last year (and it was a big debacle with the riders boycotting race 2
after several big crashes in the first race). You can dig through the
    http://www.aus-superbikes.com.au/ website and find:

Josh BROOKES Honda CBR 1000 59.997 18/04/04 (in race 1)
    and
    Daniel STAUFFER Yamaha R1 1000 59.470 17/04/04 (in qualifying)

All that compares to 67.5 or 1:07.5 for Luff in the Porche (less than 4
second a lap quicker than he went in a Mirage!) and 66.5 or 1:06.5 for
Sam on the Gixxer (about 6 seconds a lap off race winning pace in an
    Australian Superbike race).

Interestingly, a racer of similar calibre to Warren Luff as a driver
will probably still beat the Porche by around a second a lap on a 125GP
    bike :)

That Nations Cup Ferrari is still smoking though!

Usually a good idea to google before shooting from the hip, but don't
feel lonely, I've been done for it many times :)

    http://www.sportnetwork.net/main/s180/st47587.php

    90's - 1994-1996, 98-99.

Yamaha in 97 and Aprilia in 2000 (after being rather churlishly dumped
by Ducati after finishing equal 2nd in the championship points
(relegated to 3rd on a "countback" comparing podium places to Edwards)

    Then Petronas and now Suzuki.

just goes to show you that no one remembers who came second (or third as
    troy did in '99) !

It was equal second dammit ! :) The countback thing wasn't in the rule
books and should never have been done <grin>

    JL
(but who wants to remember the twat who WON the championship that year ?
I'll bet Corser is trying really hard to forget :)
