Finally got the settlement for the gixxer - they value it at 10,000
francs, which is just over 4 grand sterling at current rates. Given
that it was just over three years and, IIRC, around fifteen thousand
miles, old at the time, and had cost me just over 18,000 in the first
place, I'd say that's very satisfactory.

They tried to land me with all the storage charges, which came to over
two grand swiss, but I successfully argued them down so I only pay a
third, given that yes, I continued to ignore many letters from the
garage and the insco asking me to sort it out, but that I had told the
insco where it was. They had no record of me doing so, but seemed
happy to take my work that I had done and let me off 2/3 of the
    charge.

So all in all, a result, albeit somewhat later than I might have
    liked[1].

Nice one. All you need to do now is get the wreck shipped back and
eBay it as a minter :)

I'll need to take some expert advice on that. Where's Nige anyway?

What sort of pay-out do Lloyds make for ships lost at sea?

  6. Depends whether it's flotsam or jetsam.

On a related note: I heard [1] the Authorities/Insurers ended up getting
most (>90%) of the stuff off that beach handed back to them.
Unsurprisingly, the ebayers were the first to be collared, but not
charged afaik. Most of the others just gave it up when gently prodded
and many were genuinely salvors (at least, in their own minds) hoping
for a reward and not looking to keep the items.

Teach a man to fish and he and his pikey mates will have the
river cleaned out in a day.
