Givi: MonoRack + Tublar Pannier holder verses Wingrack II.

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by toad_oftoadhall, Feb 24, 2006.

  1. Having just wrestled a WingrackII onto a B12 (with the priceless
assistance of WUN) I've noticed that there's a Givi Tubular rack that
goes with the MonoRack to create a 3 pannier solution. It seems lighter
and less bulky than the wingrack and has much better access for fitting
    and removal.

It's a bit late for me, but for future reference, are there any
advantages to the Givi tubular kits over the WingrackII???

emerged from their own little world to say
I had a Wingrack on a VFR750. Even without any panniers fitted the thing
weighed enough to have a detrimental effect on handling.

When I sold the VFR I got shot of the Wingrack too.

On 2 of the bikes I've had since I have fitted Monorack rails & top box
plate. For me it's a much better compromise. You get the benefit of a
lockable topbox when you need it. When not using the topbox the Monorack
hardware adds little extra weight to the bike.

I've never added the Monorack pannier rails because of my experience with
the Wingrack. I don't like hard panniers as they restrict your ability to
filter greatly. For long trips I use the GIVI topbox for stuff that needs
to be kept dry and secure[1] and a set of soft throwover panniers[2] for
other stuff like inexpensive clothes, a pair of trainers etc.

[1] secure in the sense that it would be covered by insurance as a locked
pannier satisfies most insurers in the same way as a locked boot on a car.

[2] on the GS they are narrower than the handlebars.
