Give me some ideas then

Ok, so the estimate for repair of my bike is slightly shy of what I paid
for it so I'm expecting a write-off. So I need a replacement and having
tried a modern bike ot the oriental persuasion I'm looking to the rising
    sun.

I've just tried a Bandit 1200S for a month (it's gone back now) and I'd
go for one easily, specially with ABS, but given that I like that I
thought I'd ask the assembled masses (you know who you are) for other
ideas too so I can narrow down the amount of time I have to spend
licking the monitor and possibly even test riding.

I'm currently on the SO's XV535 (explains the typing) and although nippy
and fun it's not really a long-term thing for me due to the physical
size of it, and I have to keep lifting my feet off the pegs on roundabouts.

    I don't want lots of shiny - I'm a rider[1], not a cleaner, and I do
prefer a fairing to keep the wind off. Shafties are OK as I don't
    wheelie much[2] anyway.

I reckon the Fazer 1000 (with the fairing) is in the running, but only
from seeing pictures this morning, or maybe an R1 as I've had an R1100S
and an R1100RS and there's only a few numbers difference. A
GXSR1000/1100 could be in the running too, but may be a bit too extreme
in the riding position and not as grunty as the Bandit low-down. I don't
fancy a Divvy because they just don't grab me.

I did have a Trophy 900 for six months or so but never got at ease with
it - it always felt like it was about to let go on corners.

I had a couple of GPX750s (cough) years ago and enjoyed them immensely.

Any other suggestions accepted, even if coincidentally you happen to be
    selling exactly what you recommend.

Apart from monkey bikes (see XV535 above).

Oh, and not scooters either. I have tried a scooter during my time as an
instructor and I was not clever enough to do the clutch/gears thing and
steer at the same time, also the tiny wheels make me wobbly. I have
great respect for those people who can ride scooters well - I can't.

[1] There are two schools of thought on this - mine and my insurers.
[2] At all, actually. I'm testicularly-challenged in that department.

Strangely enough, I was going to wander down to 3X at the weekend to
look at some Bandits (the bikes, not the staff).

You don't mention budget, so I'll say forget the rising sun & get a
    Brutale 910R.

I like the look of them.

Unfortunately although I'm not sure of my budget they are definitely
over it. I'm probably looking up to £2500, depending on whether or not
the insurers live up to their philanthropic public image.

my advice is to give up trying to work out what you want and just buy
the next thing you see advertised for sale on the newsgroup - worked
    for me.

I did like the look of that, actually.

It will run it past SO, who knows much more about what suits me than I
    do[1].

She will no doubt be very careful about not getting me so excited that I
    drop down dead.

Does nobody have a detuned CG125 for sale?
Discount. I like discount. And dat count, and all dose counts on UKRM.

[1] I know because she told me.

LOL!! you haven't ridden one then. The GSXR1000 defines torque and grunt.

    <clutches desk in excitement>

    <lets go again>

Is yours detuned as in "some assembly required"?

I'm interested now. I thought the Bandit was a GSX retuned for more
grunt - can't remember where I read that though.[1] I might try and get
some rides on those at the weekend too.

[1] We can guess where though, can't we children?

I don't think he means the Gixxer Thou, to be fair.

You don't spend much time looking at dyno charts, do you?

Google for <bike of choice> dyno charts & knock yourself out. The
gixxer certainly doesn't lack low-down grunt, but it has got less than
    the Bandit.

There seems to be a bit of a mental block in UKRM when it comes to the
mighty gixxer thou. Claims about it being more torquey than <whatever>
are quite common, yet usually untrue.

Well the Probability & Hamas threads seem to have died, so we need
something else to argue about now.

Having done more research, I can confirm I was looking at GSX's not
GSXRs - the R looks to have slightly less luggage space and involve more
    bending.
