Had I not watched the film on Sat night, I wouldn't have got that.

Sure. Boats and ships vary tremendously - some of the modern container
ships have got so much in the way of steering assistance, like twin
screw, bow and stern thrusters, etc. etc. that they're a doddle to
steer and can react very quickly indeed. Biggest ship I ever steered
was ~170,000 tonnes IIRC and had just a single screw and rudder. That
took about a minute before your steering input showed any noticeable
    effect.

I'd like to point out I have not seen "that film" [1] for several years
    now.

[1] to quote Fiona - but she was wrong about me.

....but you just have to say "****" and "ladycock" from time to time and
    you'll be fine.

And in the old days some ships' steering wheels worked backwards.

The same reason I can't it watch either. Although I can still watch the
start of MM1 - if only for the immortal line: "We're out of the game,
unable to continue. You'd better send a meat truck, Charlie's copped a
    saucepan in the throat".

Fiona would say "I was wrong about you" but not in an amazonian warrior
    woman good way.

Have you heard of the Jahre Viking? from its size to the rather amazing
    refloating exercise.

Some of the ships I sailed on would have up to four steering stations,
from the normal use electric controls, to the manual wheel on the
bridge, the secondary manual wheel on the upper bridge (i.e. on the
roof) to the emergency one in the steering gear room.

This latter would often be pointing in reverse, so to speak, just
because of the layout and that it would need to be directly above the
rudder post. But it wouldn't really matter, 'cos there were no windows
    in there anyway.

I watched it a week or so ago, enjoyed it a lot but found the swearing
a bit OTT eventually. I must be getting old...[1]

I'm intrigued - what the **** are you lot talking about? Some sort of
Movie, clearly, and presumably one I wouldn't have seen, even if I've
    heard of it, but which?

    [snip stuff]

All this talk of ships reminded me that I was going to google for the
mega-yacht we saw at the marina at Sami, Kefalonia back in September.
I thought it might have belonged to some Russian oligarch wooing some
politicians or some such, but it's "just" a charter. Impressive, mind.

    Oh, Riiight.

I've seen a couple of them - bit shit, really, with a couple of half
    decent chases, I suppose.
