I was thinking that if you were caught with "combustibles" near a speed
camera and you used the "I just got them from the shops, I'm on the way
home" argument then your position will be strengthened if the shops you
came from actually sold the stuff.

True, that'll be why these sorts of things have to be carefully
    executed.

Aaargh! I was flashed in Limehouse tunnel this lunchtime, and from what
I read it's a digital system so incendiaries will be useless. Bugger.
Is there any chance I won't get fined?

Only if you were going really, really fast & get locked up instead.

I thought the digital jobs used infra red flashes so they could work both
ways without dazzling oncomers. Are you an alien species with IR vision?

    vision?

Hmm. I've always thought my parents were weird. And the grill at home
is _very_ bright. Perhaps you're on to something.

The ones in CH flash with a very red light, presumably including
enough IR component at a lower cost than an IR-only flash.

there's also the visual "deterrent" aspect - must be seen to be collecting

Aye, and that's pretty much how they're viewed here. With no points
system in place it's just a speeding tax, and is graduated by your
speed. Last one I had was about 60kph in a 50 limit and the fine was
40 francs, about 18 quid. Hardly worth bothering with, but there you
    go.

The brain will register it, apperently, you can **** about with peoples
brains by flashing an infra red strobe at some frequency, so that they
sort of loose concentration or something... so I heard once.

Shawly an IR image would just be a big bright blob where the engine
    was?

    http://www.speedcamerasuk.com/Truvelo.htm

To avoid the 'flash' which is given out by a rear facing Gatso camera the
Truvelo system uses an infra red flash which produces no visible 'flash' to
the approaching driver. These rely on 3 white-lines in the road, painted
just before the camera, and are triggered by strips in the road, used to
    gain the vehicles speed.

Sadly it wasn't a Truvelo but one of these chaps:

    http://www.redspeed-int.com/en/customers_case_studies_limehouse.htm

Basically a Gatso but with a digital camera so it doesn't have to be
    reloaded.

As I understand it there are three of these in each tunnel (east/west),
plus a SPECS system monitoring average speed through the entire lot, so
just cruising through at 35 could mean you lose your licence. Madness.
