Getting a bike resprayed

    Hi all,

I'm having trouble finding the bike I want (Virgo 750 or 1100 for around
£2000 in a nice colour, black or dark blue), so was thinking about getting
one in a different colour and having it resprayed.

Any idea what this would cost?

    Thanks,

    Grendel.

Depends entirely on who does the work and how good they are. Proper
Dream Machine (or similar) paint job, to your own specification: as
    much as £500.

Local sprayer, like a car bodyshop: slightly more than half that.

Local sprayer, and just ask him next time there's any old black or dark
blue car in for a paint job, to blow yours over as well - very little
    indeed.

Halfords aerosols - a few quid. Bear in mind that the resale value of
    the bike will probably plummet.

A really good custom job might actually help something like a Vertigo
sell, but won't add anything to the value.

Does anyone make carbon fibre tanks & bodywork for Viragos?

Oh, silly me. Sorry - didn't mean to take the pisces.

Yup. There is a firm called Nighthawk who do all sorts of shite for the
deep pockets that is the cruiser market.

    fucking apologists.

Would this be the cost when you dismantle the bike yourself first or
would they do that too (and reassemble at the end)?

There's the answer then - buy one in a shit colour, flog the bodywork
on Ebay & lavish it with CF.

Good idea but with one teeny weeny little flaw, there is no bodywork on
a cruiser, which could embugger your plan a bit. The epitome of yer
    nekkid bike they are.

By "bodywork" I meant tank, mudguards & side panels. I presume they've
got those somewhere amongst all the chrome.

Presume all you want but judging by the frequency of petrol stops I
doubt there is much in the way of a tank.

I'll spray it for you in rattle can engine paint, for the cost of paint
and a big bag of doughnuts.

That'd just be tank, panels, and probably mudguards. If you want a
whole bike, including frame, resprayed, you'll have to strip it down to
    the bare frame yourself.

Getting a frame re-done is cheap - locally, I was being quoted about
ukp75 for black powder coating. Whether that included preparation -
blasting, dipping, or whatever, I dunno. I've seen ads quoting
    ukp100-125 for powder coating elsewhere.

TOG@toil scribbled on the back of a
    napkin:
Well, 500 squid would even buy you a decent respray :)
It very, very much depends on the amount of preparation they (have to)
do. The decent respray I mentioned above includes stripping everything
back to bare metal, preparing it properly and all that. That's the most
time consuming and expensive part of a respray.

If they just have to 'key' the paint and blow it over in Bafroom Light
Blue then half that would be a good estimate...
.... but it'll cost a *fuckload* more than the 500 quid you mentioned
    above.

For the Guzzi I was quoted £120 to prepare and paint, in black 2 pack,
two steel mudguards, tank and two steel sidepanels, supplied loose.

Powder coating frames is no mean feat, even on something as simple as the
Guzzi, as you have to pay for it to be shot blasted and then powder
coated. Oddly it doesn't appear that common for businesses to do both.

The PITA bit is *every* fastener and piece of equipment must be removed
and the the threads masked off.

If you can take the various bits off the bike and prep them yourself,
not too difficult, plenty here can advise you what to do, it shouldn't
cost too much, £300 tops... Where are you based? Do you need advice on
prepping the panels? Email me for a 'phone no. and I will talk you
    through it...
