Most replacement drives are like that, stripped at the plant, in a clean
room, faulty parts replaced, then rebuilt and sent out as a replacement
with a full warranty. I've had several Seagate replacement drives this
    has applied to as well.

What do you suggest as an alternative, that manufacturers just throw
away the lot and increase polution?

Me too and they fail too readily. Maybe when I buy something new and it
fails, something new in return is what I want.
Noooo, send em to China and let them buggers do it :)

My Maxtor data drive managed to junk itself at the weekend

I really don't think GDB would have much chance with this, it's the
    stepper motor drive and circuitry

.... loads of smoke an' stuff

  4. Exactly. That's what pissed me off about WD - sure, they honoured their
warranty, no problems, but palmed me off with a refurb which then failed
just as the original warranty expired.

    Piece of shit.

But we're supposed to live with it, because "it's what everyone does".
Strangely, if I get a comeback on a paint job for ANY reason, I never use
2nd hand paint to replace the original:)
Compared to 10 years ago, they're ALL fucking shite now.

Still, at least they're about 60 times cheaper than 10 years ago, thank
    ****.

My first hard disk was 50Mb and cost 400 quid. Bargain that was.

Then again, ISTR the 16K RamPac for the ZX-81 was something like 99 quid
    when it came out!

  8. I've still got a working 5MB MFM drive somewhere down in the junk
storage area. If I hang on to it long enough it might become
collectable. I've so far resisted pulling it apart for its magnets.

I remember fondly my 20MB seagate MFM half height 5.25" drive. I can
still hear those heads thrashing around...

It packed up and the heads kept sticking to the platters, so now and
again I had to take it apart and unstick the heads.

    Happy days.

Not much use when you've lost a shit load of valuable info for being stupid
enough to think that relaibility was something to expect.

The first floppy drive I bought was for an Atari 800. It cost me 300 quid
    and I got it cheap.

What are they now, about a tenner?

The original Asteroids did too, as did Defender.

NOW it is, but when youve used hard drives for years without a failure, you
get lulled into a false sense of security. I used the Aari ST as the basis
for a recording system and never had a single problem. All the stuff I
recorded was just "saved" but never backed up coz hard drives were expensive
    and tape drives too slow.

When I went over to PC's I carried over this faith thing. I got bitten by an
IBM drive I'd moved everything across to and subsequently lost it within
weeks. That was the last IBM drive I've ever used.

I used to sell the 400 and 800 back in about 1981, when I worked in Dingles.
Spent a fair bit of time "demonstrating" Star Raiders...
