Need any few friends Ace? I'm a sucker for people with desirable foreign
    gaffs to visit.

Tell you what .. let's have a test. I'll walk into a bar here, strike up a
conversation in French with someone, get talking about history, culture and
general knowledge on France, and when the inevitable 'where are you from?'
question gets asked, I'll say, 'Paris'.

Cab will then do the same.

Whom do you think will be laughed at ?

I know the answer, anyone who's seen me and Cab 'in country' knows the
answer, and if Cab is honest ... he knows the answer, too.

That may well be so but, other than you, WGAF?

John Higgins bored us all completely to death with wittery prose along
    the lines of:
*ding* I consider myself 'European'[1], as I have stated on the NG
before, IIRC. Being French gives me certain political advantages and
not much more. I'm married to a French/Spanish woman with in-laws that
are Spanish and French, with my family being British (of Maltese [2]
origin). I'm quite proud that I have a mix like that. If Des wants to
say I'm not French then let him get on with it. I *really* *really*
don't GAF. If that's what keeps his tiny, insular mind happy...

I'm happy that I've been accepted into French society and the people I
meet in every day life like me for who I am. I know enough about the
country and its history to get me by and I'm fairly aware of how
politics works in this country. I'm not conceited in thinking that I
know everything about France and I'm learning more about France as time
goes on. Just over 6 years ago, I'd not even thought about moving here.
So overall, I think I've done pretty well. I'm quite proud of what I've
    achieved so far [3].

    [1] At the very least.
[2] Which is really a nice little hotch-potch of whatever races and
    nationalities you can think of.
[3] Recently, I put on my French CV that I'm just 'below fluent' in my
understanding of French. I gave my CV to a couple of people that both
crossed out the word 'courant' (everyday, fairly good but not fluent)
and they inserted the word 'bilingue' (Bilingual). Now that made my day.

  8. Yes, well quite. Just as _you_ claimed that _I_ wasn't French, you mean ?

    'He's not French'

Still, I can only assume that your own 'insular mind' was included in your
    words ...

'Even when I get French nationality, I won't be really French.'

Well all I can say is congratulations, for you must have made a
_phenomenal_ amount of progress since we last spoke, because I have a very
clear memory of on several occasions having to ask you to repeat your last
expression in English, which I'd then translate for others in the room, as
neither I nor they had understood you.

    So well done.

Nice. I'm still some way off that yet, and unlikely to get there in
the near future, given that I don't work in French. I can get by,
though, and am happy to be accepted as a "foreigner wot speaks our
    language OK-ish, like".

Dunno - how was it for you?
Heh. I have no reason or desire to change nationality, TYVM. Some of
us are secure enough in ourselves to not need to resort to such things
to prove some sort of point.

No doubt ... whereas others are secure enough in themselves that they don't
need to remind everyone how much dosh they have, and how fantastic their
house is, or name the exotic locations that they visit.

    Others, however ...

So which part of <you are in their killfile and they won't be reading
your comments> do you not understand?

Or do you like shouting into a bucket?

Thank you. I wish more would follow suit. I really don't care what he
posts about me, on the basis that the more he slags me off the bigger
a twat he looks, but when people quote it it's sometimes difficult to
    ignore.

  15. I'm in "caring sharing" mode today :)

I haven't quite got to the irritation level of killfileing him yet but
his constant drip drip drip of pathetic childish point-scoring insults
is getting there.. especially as the people he is trying to score
points off won't see his posts! As an exercise in futility it is only
exceeded by his attempt to "be one of the boys".

  18. No. I don't killfile people unless they really really annoy me. Or
unless their noise-to-signal ratio starts hitting 100%.

    And you qualify for both.
Actually they probably don't care. It's usually used as a signal for
"don't bother posting anything you might wish me to read because I
    won't be".
And you haven't *ever* bothered to stop and think that it might not be?

"Caring, sharing" is one thing, but this is plain ludicrous.
