http://makelovenotspam.com/intl/index.html I am so tempted to do this, whatdya reckon?
I would have thought Lycos might have checked that, but then again large companies do make to odd legal cock-up don't they (including the biggest of them all!). Mind you, with a capped broadband use, I'm not sure I want to do it right now, not at 3.4MB/day. It's just so tempting to want to get them back a little. I can see that this isn't going to help with bandwidth problems though, not unless this really works and get the spamming servers taken offline.
Sounded like a good idea to me, so I tried it. It doesn't hit the servers hard, just sort of 'blips' them slowly. It's fun to shout die spammers die, every so often at the screen too.
Yes, I think the idea is to get enough people at it that they overload the servers through sheer numbers. Oh yes
Technically it's a DR(eduction)OS attack. Given the amount of time & money spam costs, it seems only fair for them to be on the receiving end for a change. I'm sure the spammers will agree, unless they're hypocrites. What would be nice is for Lycos (who run it) to stop giving out free email addresses, & all the other suppliers to follow suit.
This is why I posted, not being sure what the implications of this is. I can see that it's nice to get a little payback, but at what cost?
IMO, it's stooping down to their level. I think it should be done through legislation which, unfortunately, is not easy to put into place. (Have you read some of the stats on that webpage? Quite impressive.)
Cab wrote In the absence of legislation the only answer is to stoop below their level. Then legislation needn't become necessary.
Legislation is like attacking a swarm of bees with a single fly swat. Reach for the insect spray I say. I don't see it as stooping, just being flexible and taking advantage of a weakness.
Muck wrote Call it stooping below their level and be fucking proud about it. The minute you start wrapping it up in all that apologist justification crap you lose your "retribution and I don't give a shit how much this is going to fucking hurt you but it ain't nowhere near enough" levels of credibility.
Heh.. True, but by putting values of 'stoop' or 'not stoop' on things, you could restrict the options that are available to you. I do like the thought of the spammers paying for all that bandwidth that's being used though. It may only mean that they just get more prolific in their efforts... then you've got yet another arms race.
