If one party must give way then there is an implied right of way to the
other party. Weren't the old "rocket" signs actually "right of way" signs?

  2. I would've dropped back and let him in.

You're not a bad person, Clem. You just did a bad thing. An act of
contrition, 3 Hail Mary's and a public apology should just about cover
    it.

Oh. Don't forget the obligatory bout of self-flagellation.

Sounds almost supermodellish!!!!! (Perhaps a little on the heavy side for a
supermodel, but with a lettuce leaf per day and the right drugs......) What
I wouldn't give to be that tall (and thin!!!) Yeebok, give Versace a call,
darls, and you'll be strutting your stuff on the catwalk in no time....
making megabucks..... financing any number of bikes.....

  7. Well, I seem to be in a minority here, but I'm getting used to that. I
would have accelerated past him / her. I did precisely that this morning
on my way to work when a taxi tried to occupy my lane. I feel much safer
when I'm ahead of the cars than when I'm beside or behind them.

I think I might've done the same, Andrew - I'm always very conscious of the
"sitting in a cager's blind-spot" thing, and I often feel like a total
shit-head when I speed up enough to put myself in their "not-blind spot" in
case they think I'm being a smart-arse..... but I guess at least a
    smart-arse is visible....

Sometimes I drop back, sometimes I speed up..... depends on the situation.
    I'm learning (I think)...

On a similar (but different) tack - it's probably just a consequence of
being on the road every day and getting used to people trying to kill
me..... but --- I seem to be developing a weird sense that I can't quite
explain - not sure whether I'm observing stuff I didn't observe before coz I
was focussing on not falling over, ha ha --- but it feels almost psychic and
is quite accurate. Not sure what I'm sensing/noticing, but I seem to have
some sort of "apprehension" of people's future actions (that bloke's going
to come into my lane".... well before his indication...). Sounds odd, I
know, but I'm suspecting I might just be getting more observant or
something.... is that what happens? It doesn't feel like a conscious
thing.... do experienced bikers develop a sort of "sixth sense"???? It's
    very weird.

betty (is THAT how the psychics do it?)
PS I seem to have a cop radar too, so far,
but there's no rational explanation for that-
gee, maybe I AM psychic! <snigger>

There is no right of way in any of our road rules.
Some people have a legal duty to give way.
Sometimes it's a good idea to let the other person go first anyway.

I'd have done much the same as Nev, but now that I've realised it's what
Nev would do I'm reconsidering my position.

Yes, observation is exactly what it is. Driver's rarely do stuff that's
surprising or out of the blue. Brains don't work that fast. There'll
usually always be some sort of prior indication of their intentions. A
slight head check before indicating to change lanes, slowing down
approaching one side street and then accelerating is usually an
indicator that they're going to indicate/slow/stop/turn at the next
street. I think your brain is just picking up on these otherwise pretty
subtle visual clues, even though you might not be conscious of it.

I remember noticing the '6th sense' kind of thing 12-18 months after I
started riding, but the longer I have ridden, the more aware of it I
have become.. that is, I think that someone is going to turn, so I
change lanes, but I am aware of the visual clue, the hand sliding around
the steering wheel towards the indicator, the glance in the mirror or
the turn of the head of the other driver.

...but on the other hand you might have magical powers, so don't discount
    that either.

Good idea. I'm in favour of defenestration. We will have to up the ante by
    one floor each day.

Certainly, and I was questioning his choice. My experience is that, in most
cases, slowing down is more likely to get you out of trouble than
    accellerating.
I was questioning his choice. If you see him as dim because of that, that is
    your perception.

Well, there are times where it can be a valid and successful response.

OTOH, where a rider has been scared, typically by being monstered due to
their being in the wrong bit of road in the first place, going faster,
with adrenalin pumping, can often lead to a more serious scare (or
worse) just a bit up the road... and, at a higher speed.

    regards,

I didn't actively inconvenience him and I didn't actively "convenience" him.
    I just ignored him.
Sometimes I just ignore idiots who are trying to pick a fight and sometimes
    I encourage them.
    What do you think?
