I would have given it a squirt of throttle as soon as I saw him heading
into my lane and put myself a) into his vision and b) let him know that
it was my bit of road and he couldn't have it. I probably would have
given him a good stare to demonstrate my displeasure with his lack of
roadcraft, and maybe given him a polite handsignal. Then I would have
scolded myself for letting myself get into a position where a vehicle in
an adjacent lane was almost-but-not-quite-clear ahead of me on his blind
    side.

Without... I think they noticed the first time so that should be enough of a
    reminder...but probably not

no Clem, you use your head and make a decision that trying to take the
"I have the right of way and I'm not moving" high ground might just
    get you killed.

Of course you can take the "rap me up in cotton wool" and give way to
everything, but you will prolly get rear ended. but sometimes you have
to the let the other dickhead go even when he is at fault just to save
    your own skin.

I could be wrong, but I have be told there is no mention in the the
Vic road rules that you have "the right of way" only that you "must
give way". This could mean that every one else has the right of way,
or no one has (this isn't really in relation to this argument, just a
    side argument)

If you and Yeebok want to stand your ground on YOUR right of way and
get cleaned up be my guest. Me, I'll take every event on its merits
    and judge it then.

You're a bad person, and an argumentative ****.
I would have made room for him. (except maybe if I was in the Fire truck).

Clem, surely the first mistake is 'doing the speed limit' and the second is
'being in the left lane' I think the best bet is to be going about 10k
faster than the traffic and on their right hand side so that they don't have
such a big blind spot problem. But of course given your experience you know
this and you are just stirring the pot.
If I were in this situation I think I would have accelerated and drifted
closer to the left hand side of the lane to give a larger margin, then the
rest of the problem is behind you.
Don't forget that like money, licence points and safety margins are there to
    be used if needed.

Enjoy the beer and the 'stirring', hope to meet you one day round a camp
    fire.

    O.k.here's my two bobs worth.
They tried to change lanes and then saw you , quote "I was in the left lane
doing the speed limit when the car in the middle
lane, who was almost-but-not-quite-clear ahead of me started to change into
my lane (for an upcoming exit)".
How was your postitioning, were you expecting this to happen and had
posititioned yourself to deal with this situation? you were in his blind
    spot?.
He then put on his indicator to warn you that he wanted to change lanes, he
could have been a dick and just done it, but no, he gave you fair warning.
you then held him out and made him brake so as you could travel his vehicle
length before him being able to change lanes. What was the vehicle behind
you doing while this was happening? did he give the lane changer room to
move in? At this point of the manoeuvre I think we have at least one,
possibly two drivers out there who are not thinking nice thoughts about the
    roadcraft of this motorcyclist.
Maybe next time Mr lane changer will not be so nice about his lane change.
My conclusion is that he was ahead of you on the road, made a mistake, did
not run you over and then indicated his intention to change lanes, and
although I was not there and as it is always hard to diagnose anything from
behind the safety of a keyboard, I think you should have dropped back and
given him a wave on and let it go at that.

Quote "basically an argumentative **** I just ignored him and maintained my
    80kph"
You were on your way home right? you had a bad day, right? and this was the
    last straw?
    Happens to us all.

if you are talking about merging when a lane ends, that has to do with
the line marking on the road, if the centre line just stops, the
vehicle behind must give way, if the centre line turns into a dashed
line and ends at the side of one lane, then the vehicle in that lane
must give way... but most people think that if their lane looks longer
or lasts longer then they "have the right of way".... there it is
again..does anyone "have the right of way"?

I'm with the majority on this one, I would let him in (hell I let
people in when I'm in the cage too, very un-sydney of me I know), and
yes I'd usually do that by accelerating given he wants to take an
exit. I'd only choose the slow down option if he was chopping lanes
and obviously wanted to be quicker than the general flow.

Oh and BTW I *never* willingly sit next to (ie parallel lanes) another
vehicle - that includes being next to the front quarter panel just as
much as the blind spot - even if they know you're there, way to many
cagers in this city will change lanes over the top of you.

MY gravestone is likely not to read that - after all the question was
"what would you do" not "this prick's gonna run you over".
If he proved to be more stubborn than I, then I suspect I'd get out of
his way. Fact remains though that without a decent reason to do so, I
would not. An impending freeway exit and a cager who knows you're there
and have their indicator on are not quite enough.

I may learn differently but where I live the people on their way to
Bowls in the Volvo are more dangerous than the P platers - due to
quantity and lack of ability. I have only had my Ls 3 months so I am
sure there's a lot to learn.

Yeah I kind exaggerated my height and vastly understated my weight -
however a straw's not that threatening, even from the long side. At
    170cm and 55Kg the comparison's pretty valid ;)
