Horses for courses, it was an early attempt at a night intercepter.

By 1941 it was rapidly being phased out in favour of the Beaufighter, air
intercept radar to find enemy intruders, twin engines to catch any type and
20mm cannons to make sure of the kill.

Twin engines but designed by committee. Slow and heavy.
I expect that the Mosquito NF radar equiped variant was rather effective by
comparison. Which IIRC racked up a good kill rate against V1's

Interestingly they tried a Merlin engined version of the Beaufighter, it
wasn't very popular on account of unexplained evil handling ( I think they
foisted most of them onto the Polish squadrons - who curiously didn't
produce any aces on the Mk IIF).

It was common talk in my ATC yoof that the geometry of the Beaufighter had
been fucked around with and it was never going to be a stellar performer.
The present Wiki seems to confirm.

They were better than the Defiant, and until the Mosquito came along the
best they had for that job.

Well, duh! _Public_ schoolboys play rugby. Football is played by
    Comprehensive oiks.
Point of order: I call the British (Scots and Welsh get to be sailors,
too) limeys, as well, and I'm neither a Merkin nor a Kraut. It is, after
    all, a well-deserved nickname.

I'd be deeply insulted by this lack of attention, were it not that
"Dutch" in itself is a term of opprobrium in English.

Fair enuff. Although I must tell you he might be on to something. I
have an old "Sgt Fury and his howling commandos" comic which clearly
shows an evil super-plane created no doubt by the lights of perverted
nazi science, piloted by a hapless gerry swine being foiled by a
solid, earnest british hero in the "Sky Captain" stylee.
Poor old Galveston. Never exactly a paradise at the best of times, it
looked even more forlorn when I was there a few weeks ago for the
first time since Hurricane Ike. The place still hasn't recovered
properly, and had a depressing run-down feel to it. If that wicked,
imperialistic British oil comes its way, it'll be the last straw i
    would imagine.
