Maybe he should check the score line for Vietnam while he's at it.

  4. And he replied to a post other than the one he was addressing, and didn't
bother to quote in his reply, both of which cause unnecessary confusion.
    Apart from that, great post.

Who are "they"? Work stopped in Germany on using any kind of nuclear
source as a weapon by 1943. Feel free to quote reliable sources to
    prove otherwise.

And when you say "bringing together radioactive material sufficiently
refined to bring about a chain reaction" what are you referring to?
Medical waste FFS? Because they had no working reactor to produce any
other kind of radioactive material, nor were they apparently in any
hurry to make one. The only work in 1945 was, as I said, being done
towards a Civil service power grid, not a weapon, and was nowhere near
any kind of physical result. And the Military was showing little
    interest.

Ah, usenet, where anyone can state "facts" without knowing shit. The
estimate was that they were where the Americans were in early 1942.
Educate yourself as to how far along that was.

And I see you are ignoring the military and historical absurdity of
your claim that Hitler, armed with a weapon of mass destruction, would
ignore London, Moscow and military targets to fly a non existent plane
to North America to bomb New York.

You've been caught out of your depth Ian.

Ah, but Ian specifically said "dirty nukes", not radioactive
waste, Alan. And of course I should have replied "To have a dirty
    *nuclear* bomb", my bad.

But to be fair, I am man enough to try to see Ian's point. Let's
see if I can follow his logic.

The reason the the US was in Europe wasn't to save jolly old
England, it was to stop Hitler flying a few hundred Kilos of medical
waste across the Atlantic in a plane that didn't exist to explode it
over New York, whereupon the US would cease to make war on him.

    Thank you, Captain Mainwearing...

Getting 75,000+ members of your armed services killed in something
other than a war might be considered careless.

Not only have you managed to stir up a mass of petty arguments, you've even
managed to have these cretins continue arguing *after* the name Hitler was
    mentioned.

Point of order, about 47k combat deaths and 58k total American deaths. That
first figure compares to the US in WWI.

They refused to fight all out total war so they got kicked in the ass by an
enemy who was. Had they done so and called it a war they could have had
    victory.

Wars cost lives. Winning wars decisively probably costs thousand of lives.
Like I've said before if the country doesn't have the stomach for it we
should scrap most of the armed forces completely and save large amounts of
    wonga.
