Fucking stroll on. Today, the gearbox in the GS died after a paltry 2415 total miles since new back in December. Recovered by BMW to the dealership and I now have the pleasure of riding around... ....in a fucking Ford Focus. :-((( -- | Wik -UKRMHRC#10- 2003 R1150GSA -DC#1 -'FOT#0 'FOF #39 - BOD#12 BOB#12 |# You don't believe me | "Experience is the worst teacher. |That the scenery | It always gives the test first |Could be a cold-blooded killer. | and the instruction afterward." ***** human response from wik at blueyonder dot co dot uk *****
Wik was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever: You're not the first, and you probably won't be the last one, either...
Good grief - that's awful. The gearboxes are definitely agricultural - at least from the noises they make. The one on my GS has certainly got rougher over time but at least I haven't had a catastrophe. Hope it gets sorted soonest.

Well, that's just it; the c*r is via BMW as part of the BMW assist programme. I did ask for a bike, but the dealership reckoned they hadn't got one and steered me toward taking the c*r from BMW UK. Should they not fix it within 48hrs, the dealership get to pay for the loan c*r. -- | Wik -UKRMHRC#10- 2003 R1150GSA -DC#1 -'FOT#0 'FOF #39 - BOD#12 BOB#12 |# You don't believe me | "Experience is the worst teacher. |That the scenery | It always gives the test first |Could be a cold-blooded killer. | and the instruction afterward." ***** human response from wik at blueyonder dot co dot uk *****

Yes, why not. Sale of Goods Act etc blah which I don't need to repeat here. But this could be the first of many *repairs* or it could be a one off. Thing is, if someone has a lemon, by the time they realise it, its often too late as they've agreed to previous repairs wheras they should reject it asap. If its entire gearbox failure at that mileage, I'd deffo go for the new bike thang. Of course it depends on the dealer, inconvenience etc etc. Really a matter for you. If you decide to have it repaired, reject it in writing, but then say you will accept repairs but only if the repairs are carried out without prejudice to your rejection. That way, if there's another serious problem down the line, you can still opt to reject it and won't have waived your rights away.

Well, yes and I'd been telling myself the same thing... Mmm, mine's been getting noisier, also. However, I've also been playing "hunt first gear" for the last couple of weeks upon first starting and an occasional episode of not being able to change down without a spot of bother. This morning, having scraped the ice off the seat, I initially put its not wishing to engage first gear down to it having sat for nearly a week due to work commitments requiring me to be in the c*r or take the train combined with the aforementioned freezing weather. I assumed that it would resolve itself once warm. It didn't. It got worse. I found I could only get 2nd and 3rd and had already made the decision to do the M25 in 3rd at 60mph and ~5500rpm. Once I got on the M4, I managed to hook fourth and then fifth and sixth, finding that I could happily toggle between the two on the motorway. Of course, I then discovered on leaving the m-way that I couldn't get anything below 5th, which made the last 7 or 8 miles on A and B roads, er, interesting. I finally pulled into our works parking lot accompanied by the smell of frying clutch... BMW were summoned and after a load of shenanigans, it was recovered and packed off to Vines in Guildford. Cheers, matey.

My gearbox seemed very rough at 10k when I bought the bike. I would get a blister on my foot after a long journey. At 23k, now, it seems quite smooth. The 2500 mile round trip to Italy and back in 10 days was fine. No blisters. Not sure if it has got smoother or it's me that has adapted to its idiosynchrasies.
Sorry to hear about that mate. You'd have thought that if they had to give you a cage rather than another bike they'd at least of made it a beemer.
In uk.rec.motorcycles, wessie said: I used to despatch on a R850R. Fucking horrible it was. In the end I was changing up using my boot rather than my toe IFKWIM and it didn't get any smoother until I got rid of it at 55,000 miles
Umm, no, not really. As Catman says, nice gesture an' all that, but not quite the same thing, is it? Besides, I was all Goretex'd-up and whatnot and wasn't the least bit chilly yesterday morning. Besides which, it now means my "office" suit and my "out and about suit" are now here at home. And, have you ever tried carrying Wik-sized motorcycle gear out to a car on your own? -- | Wik -UKRMHRC#10- 2003 R1150GSA -DC#1 -'FOT#0 'FOF #39 - BOD#12 BOB#12 |# You don't believe me | "Experience is the worst teacher. |That the scenery | It always gives the test first |Could be a cold-blooded killer. | and the instruction afterward." ***** human response from wik at blueyonder dot co dot uk *****
Mmm, I (naively) thought the same thing and jokingly said to the man on the end of the 'phone "Of course, a new M3 would be nice" to which the BMW Assist guy sat next to me at the time -- pleasant chap named Paul -- said "More likely to be a fucking Astra". It does actually get better; better if you, like me, enjoy schadenfreuder. Once Paul had been and diagnosed it -- "Yep, that's fucked" -- he called BMW Assist to organise recovery and the aforementioned hire vehicle. I'll not go into the blow by blow account of what happened next (sorry for that, Suze!) but save to say it wasn't recovered within the hour 'cause "they needed three guys to get it on the wagon" [*boggle*] and the poor bloke from Enterprise rent-a-shed who, whilst very professional and positive in his approach, had the Vectra he was delivering to me break down somewhere between Luton and Hatfield... I then had the pleasure of sitting in a crappy little tin box for two and a bit hours crawling around the M25...
