That one always bothers me. If you're doing the speed limit in the slow lane, why not ticket the bastard camped out in the fast lane going slower? It happens here regularly on my way to work. I'll get on the freeway, stay in the "slow" lane at the speed limit and pass everyone further left. I've never been tagged for it, but still... FWIW, I've gone ahead and reserved a TransAlp with sidebags today. It's slow enough to keep me out of most trouble.
Once again ... Really? So the plural of 'nebula' is 'nebulas', then (and not 'nebulæ')? And the plural of 'appendix' is 'appendixes' (and not 'appendices')? And the plural of 'matrix' is 'matrixes' (and not 'matrices')? And the plural of 'crisis' is 'crises' (and not 'crices')? And the plural of 'datum' is 'datums' (and not 'data')? And the plural of 'alumnus' is 'alumnuses' (and not 'alumnæ')? So foreign words cease to be foreign when used on a UK-based newsgroup, then? Remarkable. And there I was, thinking that the funniest bit about you was your habit of humping my leg in virtually every thread... -- des '... when the terrorist attack on the Maxim restaurant in Haifa [in 2003] occurred. Actually, if you're talking about the organ both are fine (although appendixes is the first listed spelling in Chambers). Alumni. Alumnae is the feminine plural of alumna. Tim

My favourite in this vein is the discussion of "octopus" in Fowler. He reckons that an anglicised plural is OK, but since the root is greek if you wanted to be posh the correct plural would not be "octopi", but "octopodes". I'm uncertain whether this is one of Fowler's little jokes.
'the octopuses' tentacles' is the example given in _The Oxford Concise_ _Guide to English Usage_. -- des 'Windows is like the faint smell of piss in the subway: it's there, and there's nothing you can do about it' (Charlie Brooker writing in _The Guardian_, 28 September 2009) <http://elderofziyon.blogspot.com/>
Heh. Always be sure to have a sacrificial Welshman to throw to the rapacious old biddies when their alcohol fuelled libidos are up. [/QUOTE] It was like the bloody Serengeti boyo.....
Totally irrelevant The plural of Autobahn is Autobahnen meaningless in English Not if they are meaningful and make sense I normally tend to avoid any direct answer to your rants
