Gear shaft snapped

Girlfriend fell off her bike this morning (woman did a U-turn as she
was filtering and she went straight over the bonnet). Luckily she is
okay, her Yamaha YBR-125 is not looking too clever though.

It looks like she will be claiming off the woman's insurance, but
these things take time, and she only has 3rd party. So, I want to fix
    it in the meantime.

Biggest problem is that the gear shaft has snapped off almost flush
with the gearbox, leaving the (steel) gear lever intact, but leaving
me with a slightly more difficult problem to solve. Am I right in
thinking the gearbox has got to come to bits, and how tricky a job is
it likely to be? Would a Haynes manual cover this procedure?

I would tackle almost any job other than gearbox disassembly on this
bike without too much hesistation, it's just that I have a vision of
springs, cogs, bearings etc flying everywhere the second I take the
    cover off.

    Thanks in advance
    Luke

Hmmmmm. On some bikes, quite a few actually, you can remove the gear
shaft from the right-hand side of the engine, after you've removed the
clutch, oil pump and other assorted gubbins. So you don't have to
split the cases. Don't have to take the engine out of the frame, even.

I've no idea if the YBR falls into that category, but a Yam dealer
    would know

I'm pretty sure you are correct. I don't know of a single Yamaha engine
taht requires the cases to be split to replace the gear selector shaft.
Sidecase, clutch complete and gear selector mech are all that need to
    come out usually

.... and yes, would expect it to be covered in Haynes.

AOL though you could find it /much/ more complicated if the shaft bent
before it broke - as is likely.

We had such a case down The Workshop where one of the guys had let his chain
get so slack it had jumped the sprockets and wrapped around gear-change
    shaft.

We had to cut it flush with the inner seal before it would pass thru and out
    the other side.

    YMMV

Have I missed something or is this eligible for the FBOTY award? If so
    congrats. and commis.

Definitely not FBOTY. She's always accusing me of "spending too much
time on those flipping newsgroups" so she can shove the award as far
    as I'm concerned.
    Thanks for all the tips.

Well done; there are many of us here that have heard those exact words.

But learn to snip sigs and extraneous text from your replies, or you'll
be the one that's getting something shoved.
