Crikey. That pisses all over MythTV. Setup took all of half an hour's
headscratching, as compared to god knows how long meddling with Myth.
Changing channels takes about 1/2 a second rather than > 5 too...

And much as I dislike Microsoft, it's a lot easier when things just work
    with an OS...

    Ah. Bugger.

Still, I wasn't going to start until next year. I had been quietly drawn
to Media Portal though, but kept going back to Myth, because I don't want
to pay for Vista, and wanted something with a longer life span than XP.

It's good, innit? And keeps getting better: it's probably about time I
made another donation to the cause.

We're using the new 'Slick' skin with our own "arty" photos as
backdrops, and I'm also using the meta-data grabber to pull in the
descriptions and images for stuff that I've downloaded. Mrs Eddie is
very impressed with it, which says a lot about how good it looks and how
    easy it is to use.

I was wondering about trying MythTV, just to see what it's like, but I
guess it's not worth the bother.

Simian is yer man when it comes to Media Portal, I think.

Personally, after having run GB-PVR for the last 3 years, I'm really
pleased with Vista Media Center on my new machine.

Late to the show, but I'm about to go and pick up a hauppage card to
replace the power hungry 1990's 14" CRT in the study with a window on
the PC. Hopefully you can still use these things in a media player
    window...

I've been using Media Portal for a while now, & it rocks. The
client/server setup's excellent if you want to watch TV on other PCs
around the house, & the integration with things like IMDB for getting
    movie/music info's really snazzy.

The only issue I've got is random lock-ups, which I'm pretty sure is
down to nVidia's usual crappy drivers as it mainly happens when
switching from full-screen to windowed TV. I think I'll be buying an
ATI card[1] in the very near future.

[1] Unless anyone's got a spare (AGP) they don't want.

As much as I love Linux I'd have to agree.
