Gatsos, what is all this about then?

  1. There is a Gatso up the road from me that has done sterling service
filling the public coffers and not reducing the fatality figures. I
went out for a little walk earlier and noticed they had stuck another
one in about 30 yards in front of it and facing the traffic. It looks
just like one of those they have to catch murderers jumping red lights
and is *not* painted the obligatory yellow. Clue anyone?

steve auvache emerged from their own little world to say
New technology? All of the rear facing, film based Gatsos, near my son's
home in Portsmouth, were replaced with forward facing digital Truvelos a
while back. These are painted yellow.

There is another setup like that in South Ockendon, near Grays, Essex - I
too have wondered what the second camera is for.

I did wonder but it is placed just at the very end of the road markings
and stuck me as being just a little too close to be "catching" camera.

  5. I have seen these in several places, mainly in Essex iirc.
I assume that the second camera is linked to the first to take photo
of the driver, so avoiding the Norfolk Chief Constable Defence Method.

    (a) They've got to spend all that money on something

    or

    (b) "The front facing cameras in the trial will be used
as additional evidence in cases where there are issues
over broken or dirty rear number plates and where there
are problems or disputes over driver identification."

    Take your pick...

And they couldn't just use a Truevelo as they wouldn't be able to catch
those cheeky motorbiker types that are responsible for all the crime and
    accidents in Essex [1]

    1. Apparently.

It is so that if you speed through, the two flashes incinerate your
bike. No need to issue those tedious NIPs, and nobody has appealed yet.
