Just wondering what your trick is to get stubborn gaskets off of aluminum
    surfaces without scratching them ?
    Thanks,

  2. plexiglas/acrylic from a plastics place up the street. they cut it
    into 1 1/2" strips-approx 3/16" thick.

put a suitable edge on it using a bench grinder. been using same on
    aircraft aluminium for 20+ years.

if you want to go high tech:

they are made for removing sealant, but work well on many gaskets as
    well.

  3. Soak the gasket in methyl alcohol. That dissolves most gasket cements.
But I remember some blue stuff that Nissan used on my intake manifold
gaskets. That stuff set up very hard and I had to scrape it off with a
    razor blade.

The trick of razor blade scraping is to hold the blade at a 90 degree
angle to the surface and work across the surface of the gasket without
trying to get underneath the gasket. The uppper surface of the gasket
yields to the constant gentle scraping and more methyl alcohol can be
applied the the gasket until it absorbs the liquid. You'll see the
gasket change color. Then scrape the top of the gasket some more,
without trying to get under it.

Mechanics who are in a hurry will use a screwdriver and try to get
under the gasket by working at a low angle. They wind up scratching the
    aluminum.

Try 'Gunk` brake cleaner to soften the cement
    or shellac.
    Then use a plastic scraper.
Avoid metal scrapers or razor blades unless you
have some skill. You can mar the surface easily if
you don't know how to use them.
