Besides, some people own pickups because they are A) cheaper and B) more
    utilitarian depsite being
    C) as big of gas guzzlers as SUVs

I think that the data may be lagging a bit. I would look for reductions
in usage to show up latter.

It's already $3.99 in Panamint Springs, CA.

  4. True, but for daily-driven trucks, most of the extra utility goes
unused on a day-to-day basis, while the fuel economy pretty much sucks
    all the time.

I wonder if the increased gas prices will lead to more people owning
multiple vehicles. For instance, I have a full-size pickup truck, and
it gets crappy gas mileage, but I only drive it when I need to haul
something in the back. The rest of the time it sits in the driveway
while I use one of the more fuel-efficient cars or motorcycles.

Maybe. I got an old Ford Ranger - it had 180K miles on it when I
inherited it (Blue book < $1K)
I used it for years happily. The reg & insurance was so small that
renting a U-haul (and paying MILEAGE
    - that is where they analy rape ya) just didn't make sense. I lent it
out to friends 6-8 times a year and
they repaid me handsomely. Then I wouldn't apss CA smog so I gave it
to my son in Utah... he
has rebuilt the tranny and is tooling around in that bugger! Who says
Ford cars won't go tghe distance?
(Sure, they run like crap right off the showroom floor - but they run
    like crap forever)
