Gas Cap Gasket material?

    I've got a 30 year old honda with a twist-off gas cap.
Gasket is gone, so I made one from a piece of inner tube.
Worked great for a day until the rubber disintegrated.
Got some cork sheet from the auto parts store. That worked
great for a couple of weeks until it disintegrated.

When I ask for gasoline resistant gasket material at the
auto parts store, I get a blank stare.

Honda will (try to) order a whole gas cap with a 30 year old gasket on it.
It costs a LOT and they can't guarantee they'll ever get one.

So, do I have any options? What material do I ask for?
Needs to be something I can get in small quantity.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks, mike

There is an auction I'm watching on eBay right now for a box of Honda gas
caps...nobody bid in it before, so I contacted the seller, because it
appears to have a tank lock for my CB900F...guy refuses to pull the lock out
and sell it separately cause "it's too expensive to retake the
pictures"...<sheesh>...point is I may end up buying it, because it will save
me a couple of bucks maybe, and I'll have some spare locks and caps for my
bike...take a look and maybe there's one for yours and we can split the
    costs somehow

Sounds like a great deal if you need a BUNCH of gas caps. He aludes to
a reserve price that's probably a killer. All I need is a freekin gasket.
    Thanks for trying to help.

OK, there's more to the story that I let on.
The local aftermarket shops didn't have anything to help.
I did find a car gas cap at a garage sale that fit.
Had to chuck it in the lathe and turn down the lip, but it fits.
Problem is with a full tank, the gas sloshes out thru the
slit between the two concentric pieces of the thing. Thought
about sealing that up, but then there's no vent. Trading one
    problem for another.
So, it's sorta workin' if I don't stop too fast until I've used up
an inch of gas ;-) Yeah, Yeah, I know, don't fill it up so much...

At one time auto parts stores sold the stuff. I think
a good industrial supply house (McMaster-Carr comes to
mind) still does sell a variety of gasket materials.

  6. Neoprene is the traditional fuel resistant "rubber"

Don't know if it comes in sheets.

ISTR that a while ago someone asked about getting a replacement gasket
for their gas cap, and the answer was to take the old gasket to an auto
parts store, and browse their aftermarket gas cap selection. When you
find a gas cap that has a dimensionally suitable gasket, purchase the
cap, then remove the gasket from it and install on your old gas cap.
What you do with the aftermarket automotive cap is your problem.

This strategy should work if you can't find a reasonable source of
gasket rubber (though it shouldn't be that hard to find such
things-industrial supply house, equipment dealer/fabricator, farm supply
store, a walk through the phone book should turn up _something_...unless
your locale is similar to mine: here, you simply cannot get much metric
hardware. Nobody carries the stuff, nobody's distributer can get it.
Hope that's not the case where you are.

  8. I'm surprised you can't get a separate gasket from Honda - I was able to
buy one both for my old CD175 twin, and my CB400 Four.

i'm wondering if you could make do with a neoprene o-ring from the hardware
    store...

That was the first thing I tried. Just too much slop in the system to
keep it in place. Now...I just thought about making a spacer to keep it
centered. That might work. Now I need some gasoline resistant glue to
hold the spacer in place....it never ends..

Gotta go out and put some mouse pads in gasoline. I may already
