Gas and carb issue

    Here is the issue. I have a Kawasaki vn800a. It was leaking gas out
    the carb into the air box. This started to happen after switched to
    reserve one day and than filled up. I took it to the shop they fixed
    the float and than prob started again (about 80 miles after the shop
    fixed it). Took it back to shop they said it was now the seat with a
    slight tear and the whole carb needed to be replaced. They fixed it
    (said they would only charge me if the problem was fixed.) Well about
    200 miles later the problem is back. When the gas is getting shot into
    the air box it is from the carb. The bike runs crappy and will stall
    at lower RPMs when I am not running it with the throttle open. It runs
    loud and rich at this point. I opened the petcock and everything seems
    fine there. In the gas tank there is some rust, but not a ton. What
    the heck is causing my prob. Is it something before the clutch (fuel
    line/rust/tank/petcock) or is it something after the clutch
    (spark/mixture/something else) It most like is not the clutch since
    that is a new one and it is still causing the issue. PLEASE HELP ME.

  2. This stuff (POR-15) is a really good tank liner if you follow
    their directions carefully.

    Also does a good job sealing pinhole leaks. Only caveat is that
    it attacks aluminum. When I did the job, I'd put a cut open soda
    can under the petcock to catch drips and the sucker ate right
    through it. Definitely take off the petcocks.

    On an older gravity feed system, I'd also put in an in-line fuel
    filter. Not sure about this on a vacuum operated petcock but
    I'd guess it'd still be OK.

    I'm a little surprised that they replaced the whole carb even
    if you had a bad float seat. Seems like they could have
    repaired the old carb.

    The rust. In the short term, put a filter on the fuel line. In the long
    term, POR-15 the tank.

    OK, that's the symptom of a stuck float valve, floats improperly set,
    or crud on the float valve or the float valve seat.
    Yeah, I never use the reserve setting on a motorcycle except in
    emergencies when I stupidly forget to fill the gas tank. All the water
    and rust and crud collect in the bottom of the gas tank, and when you
    turn the petcock to reserve, all the crud goes down to the carburetors
    and sets on top of the float valve.
    You need to find an honest mechanic and sue that $tealer$hip for
    cheating you.

    The float valve seat cannot get torn, it's made of brass. The float
    valve probably has a rubber tip, but, if you look up the carburetor
    parts diagram on www.partsfish.com you'll see that the float valve
    probably costs less than $5.00
    The idle jet and idle ports are plugged up by the crud in the carbs,
    but the gasoline level in the float bowls is too high, making the
    engine run rough and rich.
    What I said. Dirty carbs. Stuck float valve. Floats set too high.
    Crud in the carburetors.
    Your head is all messed up on this before the clutch and after the
    clutch shit.
    It has nothing whatever to do with the clutch.
    Clean out the gas tank, clean out the petcock, clean out the
    carburetors. Find a mechanic that knows shit from Shinola without
    tasting it.
