What does the 550 give me that the 500 doesn't? Garmin's site isn't
    particularly helpful.

    ha ha.

-50 really, as the 500 is around 100 quid less than the 550.

Full Europe and North USA coverage, out of the box.

IIRC the 500 is just the uk, but I really can't be dead sure as it was last
    year that I bought mine.

    HTH.

Really? ****! I never even thought to check, I'd have taken it to Denver
    if I'd known.

It'd have beaten the crap out of Blaney's map-reading.

Ah, now that's a good enough answer for me. I want to be able to use
it in car and on bike, so the car mount and speaker are important.

And the prime reason for buying a new one over my existing Tom Tom One
is that I want it for a European trip next year, so having maps of
    Europe is kind of important.

    I'll double check tomorrow.

It seems, that the package has changed since I bought mine. When I got mine,
the 400 wasn't around, and both the 500 & 550 had car & bike mounts as
    standard.
The 550 was over 500 squid, and the 500 was about a ton less.

360 odd for the 550 now, but still around 100 less for the 500, which
    is what prompted my question.

Bloody 'ell, I paid just over 500 sovs when it came out this time last year.
It's been very good though. I had the SP3 before, and that was brilliant. I
use my 550 everyday. mainly in the car as I'm a travelling engineer. It's
probably covered over 60K miles since I got it so far.
The four riders in my group have all bought one now as well. Mine will be
taking me down to Spain next year for 2 weeks holiday )
