Garmin Quest Questions

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by toad_oftoadhall, Nov 18, 2006.

  1. Some questions on the Garmin Quest for motorcycle & car use, and the
    occasional use sailing & hillwalking.

    1) If you get the version preloaded with Europe maps what is the detail
level like? Are all the smallest roads/tracks included?

    2) Can it give OS grid refs?

    3) Can it give Lat/Long?

    4) Can you load nautical charts? Which ones? Cost?

    5) On the bike I'll want to connect it straight to the 12v battery
terminals. I asssume some kind of adaptor exists?

    6) Will it come with a clamp to fix it to bike handlebars?

    7) Are additional/replacment memory/batteries available and easy to
    install?

    8) Without access to a PC is it easy to set a route with multiple
waypoints to ensure you take in specific roads/sights on a trip?

    9) Is most functionality available without access to a PC?

    10) Does it give distance to next turning? (ie Prepare to turn left in
    10kms?)

    11) Can you change or update the pre-loaded maps?

    12) Is there a cheaper equivalent?

    13) Can you load OS map data to it?

You might get better info over on

    I've just got a 2610 from http://www.gpsw.co.uk/index.html which is a lot
cheaper than the Quest1 or 2. The do 2610/Quest bundles that include
everything to mount the unit on a bike. The 2610 might be an option for
most of your activites [1] and more versatile as it takes memory cards so
switching between mapping will be easier, and quicker if you use a card
reader. Larger screen with touch control rather than buttons seems better
    to me, too.

Marine & OS maps available from http://www.garmin.com/cartography/ at silly
    prices.

[1] needs a power sources so get an Etrex for walking with the money saved

  3. explained :
All, probably not all tracks - but it does include an amazing amount of
detail of tracks and so far as I can tell all of the roads.
    I believe so.
    Yes, in several formats.
The Quest needs 5v, I used a 5v regulator and converted the mains
charger cradle as supplied with the Q1 for bike use.
No and they can be quite expensive.
Officially you would need to send it to Garmin to do this, unofficially
    you can DIY.
    I believe so.
Distance to next turn is given all the time, then spoken as you get
    nearer.
    With a PC, yes.
For what the Quest does, no - though I prefer the Quest I to the II.
You can load in whatever maps you can find and there are third party
utils to produce maps - however OS never agreed to their maps being
digitised for anything but there own use.

You can download the Quest manual from the Garmin website - also you
can check the map detail with the mapviewer on the same site
