Garage furniture

  1. Wot he says:

Lots of lighting. Get florescent strip lights from a trade dealer, much
cheaper they will have a 'bargain fitting' for workshops. Don't bother
with defusers they double the price.
    Lots of power points
    Lots of racks / shelves
Lots of plastic boxes with lids the sort you get at a 'pound' shop.
Bench, made of 4x2 rough sawn frame and thick MDF on top.
    Bench vice.
    Pillar drill
    Music.
Paint the walls and ceiling of your work shop white.
If the garage can take it put a ceiling in and use the space above for
storage the lower ceiling will make the whole place warmer for winter
    work.
If you have a concrete floor seal it with floor paint, makes working so
    much nicer.
Deal with the drafts round the door, holes in walls etc. It makes a big
difference in the middle of the winter.
Cheap source of heat for winter.
Think seriously about security. A simple addition to the door with a
padlock will deter lots of thieves, they'll go next door.
A simple alarm system with noise and flashing lights.

A workshop? What are _you_ going to do with a _workshop_?

Oh - thinking about it, get a big comfy chair for you to sit in, while
you watch everybody else do the work :p

OK, seriously, I'd get lots of storage - cupboards and drawers rather
than shelves, as a lot of what you store in a garage is small bits and
bobs, which will be lost on a shelf.

Loads of lighting, as you say - some of it movable. Loads of plug
sockets too. Sink a bike turntable in the floor. Properly board your
rafters, stick a heavy-duty ladder or steps up there, and use it as a
storage room / loft. If you can be arsed, a sink plumbed-in would be
    very useful too.

And once you've got an infestation of garage pixies, you've got real
    problems.

Well, apart from the garage, I have parking for five cars, so that's not
    a problem.

Some carpet. A couple of largeish off-cuts. Makes it much warner and
generally more comfortable, especially if you're kneeling.

A couple of wooden chairs or stools. Useful for sitting on and also for
resting stuff on whilst you're working.

Angle-poise lamp, with a good, bright bulb.

    Large rubbish bin.

    Plenty of rags.

Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Verdigris
And is an absolute ****** when you drop something small. I'd go with
    rubber mats, myself.

My workshop has a false floor, lined underneath with 1" of expanded
polystyrene. With a fan heater it is very toasty.
    Good call.
    Another good call.
    The best call of all.
    Oh yes, them too.
