If you hear a loud ping noise then it may be prudent to duck *very* quickly.

and listen for the jolly sound of large metal spring against plastic?

I found the ping of a sidestand spring scary enough last weekend - it
sort of merged with the hiss of it going by my ear.
Not as scary as putting it back on though, when I realised all my spring
stretching effort was levering the bike off its centrestand into my lap.

Fortunately not. But the flailing cable did whip off my woolly hat, which is
too close ofr comfort. Yet another reason to be glad I'm not some over five
four tall giant. Still took a glass of the hard stuff to calm my nerves
    afterwards.

You would be assuming that I hadn't completly removed the plastic cover. On
the plus side it wasn't my garage so it isn't my wall thats been dented.

I was thinking more of expensive bike-related plastic.
Our garage is sufficiantly spartan that the springs are on diplay in all
    their rusty sproinging[1] glory.

[1] Attempt at spelling the sound our garage door springs make.

Didn't one or maybe all the commando models share a clutch with the
1275 mini? or was it perhaps a modification? Apparently they were
interesting to work on, sat on the floor with your legs apart waiting
    high velocity clutch[1] parts.

That reminds me. My woolly hat is nowwhere near enough for any kind
of comfort. Now where did I put it?

    ^^^^^^^^

So that would be advice about someone who had been buried doing this
    then, then?
