Further MoT madness ...

Now the system is computerised, it wont/can't fail, right?

    Wrong.

Elly's car ran out of test when she was away, so we knocked it in for
test on her return - and it failed. Some fairly heavy-duty spannering
ensued, the details of which I won't bore you with at this juncture,
and a retest was booked. Apart from it isn't a retest these days,
they have to carry out a full test, not just on the rectification
    works.

There hangs the tale, dear reader. I attended the retest (following
the 11th hour frantic bulb-replacing) at the appointed hour. They
couldn't test it, could they? They haven't been able to test
*anything* for 48 hours now ... as "the system is down".

I asked them about the emergency manual option. They were fully
conversant with the system ... but the system requires the tester to
call a given number and announce the fault, the result of the test and
jump through a few hoops before he is allowed to write the
    certificate.

Siemens administer the system on behalf of VOSA. The "emergency"
number connects to Siemens. Siemens have a recorded message, advising
that the system is down and no test certs can be issued. And that is
    it.

    Game over, thanks for playing.

Do not insert coin, the game is fucked.

This is *not* limited to the one station I tried in Flitwick,
    apparently ...

There you go then, fancy trusting something that needs reliability to the
    Krauts!
Siemens I believe look after all the traffic lights as well.

(Although, IIRC Siemens is now owned by Fujitsu!)

I thought it had always been a case of 'as soon as it leaves the test
centre, you have to have a full retest'? My understanding was that a test of
the rectification works was only allowed if the garage that tested it had
    done the work.

Sounds like a perfect opportunity to get a bent MOT, not that it would
be bent of course, just bought forward.

Last time I had a MOT done, if you wanted to take it away and do the
work yourself you had to bring it back the same day or else you'd get
charged the full fee and have a full test.

This was only a couple of months ago.

It's a nationwide problem, but that story by the dealer is bollocks.
Their recorded message gives the testing stations authority to break the
seal on their Emergency Testing Pack - which is a pad of hand-written
certificates you can issue in lieu of the real thing.

And as rule it depended on the type of item it failed on. ie a bulb was
usually ok to take away and replace.

It won't be as they're all linked.

This has been going on for 12 months in HGV testing but they can still
    do it manually(ish).

Correct. When I worked for that ghastly mob, we often bid against FJ for
projects. The Fujitsu Siemens thing is a JV, separately owned. Fujitsu
Services is the rump of ICL. The mob who run things like the MOT is SBS.
    Who run the Passport Agency.

Tax credit *used* to be EDS. I can't recall off hand who won that off them.
CSA might be Capita, I think they run their call handling. Or is that CRB.
