Probably a good idea. How many futuristic coffee makers can one author think
    up?

heh - hang on, is "not liking SF" one of your affectations? I mean, I
know it's one of Blaney's but I can see it suiting your purposes as
    well...

I barely have an opinion, I've read so little. Although one of Harrison's
Deathworld books was execrable and that sticks in my memory. Something about
going to a planet with variously evolved tribes pissing about while some
dictionary-addicted alien chased him around being an annoying cnut.

what other stuff do you like to read? There's plenty of stuff in SF
    that's actually good literary fiction.

There's plenty of "wanking around in sill spaceships shooting aliens"
    crap too, of course.

    "it's all good"[1]

    [1] actually, it's not, Sturgeon's Law applies - fittingly - most
    strongly to SF.

Well I've rattled on about the Ender's Game series before because it deals
with stuff at a different level than running around and shooting stupid
aliens. I'm not really stuck for things to read generally, but thanks.

    **** off ****. It's not an affectation. I just don't like SF.

Oh, I know, this is you trying to get me back for the light-switch
thing yesterday. <wags finger> I know your sort.

I'd still seriously recommend you try Atwood's "The Blind Assasin" -
one of it's many points it makes is "why SF can sometimes be good". Or
go 1/2 way and read some Magic Realism (Marquez' "100 years of
Solitude" would be an excellent start)
actually, I've never had a problem with light-switches. And one of my
old bete noires of OCD, power switches, is finally gone - I've managed
to avoid turning off the (empty, but switched on) socket in my hallway
    for over a month now.

And I've almost stopped having to check the gas hob is off completely
    now too.

Just the "having to check my credit card is back in my wallet twice
after using it" thing now to go, and I'll be completely sane.

Oh I will. At some point.
I've read Love in the time of cholera. Liked it.
I'm a right **** for checking my passport a hundred times on the way
to the airport. But I suppose everyone is.

heh, yeah, me too - any also checking the tickets to make sure I'm
    driving to the right airport...

shit, too quick on the send button. I meant to say, Angie's brother's
just flown to NY with his family to do a few days there, and then
hiring a car and touring over to Boston.

Now we're having to fedex his driving licence over to the silly twat -
how he became a millionaire, I'll never work out.

So it seems. Probably one of the reasons I enjoy laughing at darsy's
OCD is that I know that I'm only a hair's breadth from it myself.

  18. Ive done that. or rather, two of us on the same plane who could
    drive did that.

still, it meant I could get happily pissed instead.

i've taken years to get over similar worries. think i have a good excuse
though: mother's geography is so bad she (and offspring when we
travelled with her) has occasionally ended up in the wrong country. and
once we came to England by ship and landed at Plymouth which she thought
was the same as Southampton: the taxidriver was surprised but
financially pleased when she airily ordered him to drive us to Ringwood.
she thought he took rather a long time.

  20. Passport is normally only checked a couple of times, but
the tickets for the flight time are checked often. And the
clock watched, average speeds and distance remaining worried
