I've read Neuromancer, and frankly wondered what all the fuss was
about. I did read it 10 years after it came out, tho.
I'll try and look that one out.

Dunno if "Altered Carbon" counts as cyberpunk, but it's easily better
than anything else I've come across in that genre.

  3. Certainly better than Diamond Age, although, as darsy says,
    Neuromancer.

    ah. It's an '80s thang.
    not really, no - cybernoir.
yeah, it and the sequel "Broken Angels" are excellent. I didn't enjoy
"Market Forces" quite so much, but it's still a great read.

What about The Difference Engine by Gibson and Sterling? That's a good one.

  6. MF was brave; the temptation to do another book with Tak
as the main character to pad out the universe a bit must
    have been quite strong.

never got around to reading that. The only Sterling I've read is the
non-fiction "The Hacker Crackdown", and the only reason I read that is
that I was paid to do so.

Well, technically I was paid to write a review of it, but it's
traditional to read the book concerned first[1]

[1] though by know means an industry-wide practice.

MF wasn't new. He wrote it as a film script years ago and basically
just turned that into a novel.

Personally I think it would have made a better film.

hmm - I'll probably give it a go anyway.
err, there's been four already, or five if you count the short story
    collection...

    [Alastair Reynolds's "Revolation Space" universe]
it's just occurred to me that you might not count "Chasm City" as part
of the series, though it's definitely set in the same universe.

Chasm City doesn't really fit in with the other three which are the
Inhibitors story arc. It's more a back story.

When I used to occasionally review books on a freelance basis, I used
to read the first chapter and the last chapter and a few random pages
    inbetween. Worked fine.

heh - I can see that working for fiction; not so useful on
    non-fiction/technical books.

probably get around to reading it at some point - although they're not
particularly well written, the plot/scenario is interesting enough.

Did you post the alarm docs to me, BTW? I still can get the cunting
    thing to go...
