Blue Oyster Cult were the loudest I experienced. They weren't happy making
your ears hurt they blinded you with bursts of intense light at the same
time as they cranked the volume up.

I dunno about loudest but the most dazzling was Spiritualized doing
Ladies and Gentlemen... at the Barbican last year. About 40 minutes of
    non-stop strobe.

It was somewhat unpleasant. And good.

    Bloody sure it did.
Both times I've seen them, the *quality* of the sound has been so far
ahead of any other concert. The only exception was Nigel Kennedy.
DSOTM 5.1 anyone? 'Interesting' but I prefer the stereo version.
Of course. I still enjoy live stuff, but unless there's a pressing
emotional connection, normally I'll listen to studio stuff at home.
    Of course :)

I saw the Mojos at Wolvo College in 67, and Status Quo in their
'Matchstick Men' period at Aston Uni in 68. On each occasion the
quantity of Newky Brown consumed rendered me oblivious to the quality of
    the performance.

I've not listened to it enough to make a true comparison. I do like the
bits of running around coming out of the rear speakers, and the immersive
intro to Time as the bells come from all angles. DA BELLS!

AFAICT it's not really 5.1 but 4 channel.

    I do like the

Like is said 'interesting' but I find it ultimately little more than a
    gimmick.

Decent stereo can (IMHO) make the bells coming from everywhere more
    'believable' than that particular mix.

What used to be Bedford teacher training college was the venue of
choice for unknown bands in the '70s but since then the Angel was
quite good though for the sake of a 25 mile ride you'd struggle to
    beat the Roadmender in Northampton.

The first was probably Rickie Nelson in the late 50's, with my parents
and screaming sister. The first on my own was either Ray Charles or
Ravi Shankar, around '64. The _best_ show was undoubtedly the 2 1/2
days of Monterey Pop. Good shows in the UK were the first Knebworth in
'74 with the Allmon Bros, CSNY at Wembley, and Doctor Feelgood at some
little pub in South Ken. The best thing lately was Dan Hicks and Jim
Kweskin last week at the Belly Up.

Live recordings? Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison is pretty good, and
something you'd never have experienced live. Well, let's hope not.

I have to agree about the Stranglerrs - I've got a live album somewhre
and it does sound prett rough. However, I saw them (post Cornwell) at
the Cambridge Corn Exchange and it was great: a bunch of musicians
playing some new (to me) stuff, many old favourites and apparently
just enjoying what they were doing. I guess it was the 'live gig'
    thing.
I think Meatloaf at the Hammersmith Odeon was the first 'big band'
live act I ever saw, and it was a pretty spectacular show. Supported
by a band called Air Races, IIRC.

Queen, Clapton and Elton John were all professional and sounded good
    at Wembley Stadium.

I've also seen quite a few of the older bands in the last few years at
the Newmarket Races: they do a few special Friday night shows over the
    summer months.

As a result I've seen Status Quo (highly enjoyable); Blondie (La
Harry's voice took a couple of songs to warm up; she sounded a bit
breathless at first, otherwise great); Human League (the only ticket I
could get that year: I really enjoyed the gig though, and it made me
realize just how many hits they had); Madness (fun and lots of
favourites); Jools Holland (Good performer but not really my cup of
tea); Ronan Keating[1] (look, I was with K and her girlfriends, all
right?). I think that's all of them.

[1] His first name was writ large on the back of the stage. From where
I was standing, a support pillar for the stage canopy eclipsed the
'R', which I found childishly amusing.

Oooh, actually I like Stranglers, All live and all of the night. But
the *gig* I went to was *really* rough.
My experience quite the reverse, clearly. We went to see them at the

Not my thing, but I've heard they are good.

It wouldn't have made any difference - the red-haired **** fired all of

  18. Could say it was an accident waiting to happen, but nobody had a crystal
ball. If the organisers were aware of the tendency to rush forward, they
should have put some preventative measures in place, but that's with
    hindsight.
I didn't know one of the dead was from Rhu, but he was far too young for
me to know during my time spent up there.
