Blues music in particular is often better in a live recording due to the levels of improvisation. BBKing's album recorded in the prison is one. SRV's live versions are often better than the studio versions, especially when he covers Hendrix. Thin Lizzy's Live & Dangerous has always appealed to me more than their studio versions. Rory Gallagher Live 74 was one of his best records. More recent live stuff I listen to are the Jeff Beck DVD recorded in Ronnie Scott's and Gilmour's concert at the Albert Hall on the Remember a Night tour. Both of these manage to capture some of the atmosphere at the gigs and aren't spoilt by noisy crowds.
