Some of my favourite albums have been live recordings. Blues music in
particular is often better in a live recording due to the levels of
improvisation. BBKing's album recorded in the prison is one. SRV's live
versions are often better than the studio versions, especially when he
covers Hendrix. Thin Lizzy's Live & Dangerous has always appealed to me
more than their studio versions. Rory Gallagher Live 74 was one of his best
records. More recent live stuff I listen to are the Jeff Beck DVD recorded
in Ronnie Scott's and Gilmour's concert at the Albert Hall on the Remember
a Night tour. Both of these manage to capture some of the atmosphere at the
gigs and aren't spoilt by noisy crowds.

Live & Dangerous has alweays been considered one of the better live
rock albums. Ditto Queen's Live Killers[1].

But I think my favourite live album is Strangers In The Night by UFO.

[1] Self referential sub-thread: it was mainly recorded at the Hammy O
    gig tht was my first.

I wouldn't have thought that seeing the Henry Gorman Band in the Ashton
Hotel would stir much interest. Mind you, my first big gig was Boston at
Ingleston so that might not be much better.

My first album, a couple of years after I saw them. Perfectly superb.

Absolutely. But if we're being honest, it has to be called a "live"
    album.

iirc, it was Quo, AC/DC (supp by Def Leppard) and Motorhead(
Girlschool) all in the Autumn term of 1979.

It was two years later that three of us met in the pub to :

"Guess what I've got!" whilst each brandishing three Quo tickets.

    For consecutive nights.

The Eagles Live 80 is my favourite live album and they were good when
I saw them a couple of years ago - but they did adapt some of the
songs (like Wasted Time) to accommodate the fact their voices were
    aging.

Bryan Adams was good live, Extreme wasn't.

Ok a studio album may be technically perfect but a good live performance has
    a definite spark about it.

One of my favourites is Planet Gong Live Floating Anarchy. Jethro Tull Live
Bursting Out is my second favourite.

Marinas first hubby did the lights for Pink Floydd way back when they
were starting out. She could remember being dragged along to gigs and
being really bored... The hubby decided that Floydd probably wouldnt
go anywhere so he'd be best getting a propper daytime job...

I've got that on vinyl somewhere - in a crate in the garage I think. I
haven't listened to it since I got rid of my turntable, so well over 20
years ago! I think I'll download it and have another listen.

Oops indeed. A guy I house shared with at Uni, pretty handy on the
guitar, had decided to leave his band to "get an education". The band
went on to become Simply Red.

ICBW, but I suspect Pulse had its share of post production. Having said
that, the early PF gig I went to though the sound was *stunning*.
Quadrophonic in the 70's. It is true that many a 'raw' recording of a
live gig sounds pretty bad, but when you are there you just don't notice
it. As with a live sports event, it's a completely different experience
being in the thick of it, compared to watching/listening to it on the box.

The place to stand for the best audio is right in front of the mixing
desk IME. I don't recommend sticking your head inside the bass bins at a
    Motorhead concert.

We were really lucky in that our local yoof club leader was a fan of
live music and so organised tours down to London to see them. I don't
remember them being particularly expensive either.

Cranfield tech. used to put on quite a few gigs with upcoming bands.

  20. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Champ
Heh. I saw Wild Horses at Hitchin college in about 1978(?). The lead
guitarist was Brian Robertson (he of Thin Lizzie fame), He had a fucking
*huge* spliff stuck on the end of a guitar string which he would take
the occasional toke from throughout the gig.
