    Says it all really.
Two fails basically, one on the good old emergency stop, back wheel locked.
Other was a right hand turn on a crossroads with a yellow hatch box.
Suddenly though "you're not allowed to stop in the hatch unless you have a
clear exit". Turns out there's an exeption which he wouldn't tell me as I'd
    forget :)

Not a problem in itslef, as long as you keep it in control and stop
    within the distance allowed.
It's allowed if you're making a right turn.

Bad luck and all that - next time do it on a proper bike and he won't
    be so bleeding awkward.

I did keep it under control but not sure what the distance of the skid was,
Im guessing it was 6 feet, which is a bit long i'd guess but i dont know
    what the limit is?
Yup, that's what I was doing too, hence the fail :-/
*heh* I don't believe that he was deliberatly being awkward I have to admit,
seemed quite a decent chap really.

It's allowed if you're making a right turn AND the only thing preventing you
from completing the manoeuvre is oncoming traffic. For example, its not
allowed if the road that you intend to turn into is blocked by stationary
    traffic.

  5. I don't care what the instructors might say, but my advice would be to
forget all about the back brake in an emergency stop - it's naff all use.
The fact that it locks up so easily proves that the weight transfer is to
the front, and that's the brake you want to be using. Pull the front brake
on progressively, harder and harder as the weight transfers forward, and
you'll be amazed what a short distance you can stop in. In fact, if you put
your mind to it should be able to stop in barely half the distance the
examiner actually expects you to, but don't bother trying that hard as you
don't want the front to lock up.

As for box junctions, ISTR that you are ok to enter if you are turning right
and are only waiting for the opposing traffic to clear the junction - summat
like that anyway. It'll be in the Highway Code - I'm too lazy to dig out my
    copy.

    Good luck next time.

I took my first test in 1967 - failed because I emergency stopped the bike
the way I had learned in the fields - locked up the back, turned the bars
and put the bike slightly sideways; I stopped very quickly but failed on "an
uncontrolled skid". I explained that the skid was under control and
offerered to show him I could do it again - no dice.

Next time I passed even though I rode over a zebra crossing with people on
it - the examiner was round the other side of the church and couldn't see
me. I don't envy people taking their test nowerdays.

  14. Them's fightin' words mister, and I challenge you to an emergency stop duel
! Yes, I can do more than talk the talk. I may be crap at cornering, but I
do a mean emergency stop - really.

Actually, I do use a _little_ bit of back brake when SMWBO is, er,
ballasting the back down a bit, but otherwise I stand by my words.

You gave generic advice that isn't true in numerous cases, one of which
    you've just pointed out

Learn to do it properly and then, and only then, can you decide if that
technique is really required in a given situation on a given bike

True, you're not expected to perform a real emergency stop on your test.
But that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it properly - firstly because I
have known people to be failed because the examiner spotted that the
rider hadn't used the rear brake at all, and also because there are a
hell of a lot of bikes that require you to use the rear brake for
    numerous reasons, including simple stopping

The rear brake is a massive weapon in your bike riding arsenal and
    shouldn't be ignored
