    Usually, yes, but not this time.

    I mean, if you knew you were down to your last 1.5 litres, and were
    riding accordingly, you should be able to get 45mpg out of pretty much
    any four-stroke bike, no?

    Yes. Certainly. In the highest gear the topography would allow,
    coasting as far as poss on a cut motor, never touching the brakes.
    That would prolly do it.

    I did this on the Autoroute in France last year. Managed close on 200
    miles out of a tank, as opposed to the usual 140 to '1 light flashing'
    plus whatever I can get out of reserve.

    ISTR that you shouldn't cut the motor on an injected bike - just shut
    the throttle and let the ECU take care of cutting the fuelling. Worked
    for me, anyway.

    I reckon the most efficient would actually be to stick it in top gear
    and cruise at around 30-40 or whatever speed it's comfortable at. Even
    without braking, it's going to be less efficient to allow the bike to
    slow down and accelerate it again.
    Difficult to measure exactly, but I reckon that on a couple of
    occasions I managed to squeeze something close to 100mpg out of the
    Trumpet once the light was on with no fuel stops in sight. Just for
    twenty miles or so, cruising in top at about 50mph.
    Depends. IME bike injection systems don't actually cut the fuel
    completely on the overrun, as can be demonstrated by using the kill
    switch on a closed throttle. Dunno if it's true for all bikes, but on
    injected Triumphs, Suzukis and Hondas wot I've ridden the KS makes a
    noticeable difference, indicating that some fuel is still getting
    through.

    Umm, not unless you rode like a gurlie wuss. You and I have been spoiled
    by the remarkable economy of big Kawasakis. My T/ace isn't anywhere near
    as good on fuel as the old ZZR11 was, but IDRGAF cos it's fun.

    Probably if I rode like a wuss, but I have said before that when I start
    to measure things like that on a serious basis, I'll hang my lid up for
    good.

    Well, obviously, or I wouldn't put up with the frankly shocking economy
    of a VFR....

    It does, however, take a lot of discipline to eek 45mpg out of the VFR.
