And then there's that popular engine for modified track cars - the 2-
litre Vauxhall DOHC "red top" unit. The cheapest way to release an
extra 20bhp from it, even in tuned/chipped/remapped form is to throw
away the brain and the EFI and wedge a set of big old-fashioned
    carburettors on it.

My first bike was an R80RT. Although compared to a modern Japanese bike
it does seem very heavy and agricultural. Saying that, I'd have one again.

Ask yourself if you want to ride a bike or sit in the garage working on it ?

Definitely the former which is why I'm somewhat going off the idea of a
bullet after doing a bit of research.

    DozynSleepy wibbled forthrightly:
I had one of those too. Excellent work horse for dispatching it was. I
had the Plod version. Drained the battery like a cnut though.

That's all very well, but you're still left with a fucking ugly,
overweight, slow foul handling lump of a bike that is shit to ride.
Given the choice I'd take the temperamental but fun bike over the
boring blancmange on wheels any day.

    I like my R100RT.

But I did curse it last summer when most of the usual airhead things
    went wrong with it.

Must drag it out of the garage and MOT it soon.

An R100? Certainly not heavy. A Mono handles and stops very nicely. 70 BHP
is nippy enough for an old 'un.
Looks are in the eye of the beholder.

Well, as older/cheaper ones use a common injector for all four
cylinders, then no; differences in the path through the manifold to
each cylinder will see to that, as will difference in the exhaust
    manifold path.

It's probably more of a problem these days with tighter emissions
    regs.

Or, in the case of my Quota, by plugging in a special connector
(that's conveniently tied to the loom as standard) and counting the
code flashes on the indicator LED.

I've had two problems: a corroded wire on the phase sensor (flashy LED
told me where to look) and a knackered head temperature sensor (flashy
LED didn't help, but I eventually diagnosed it myself, even though the
sensor was reading the correct value on a meter).

Laptops? We don't need no steenking laptops.

Idle mixture is adjusted with a screw on the ECU box.

  10. Especially with a set of DCOE 45s or similar on it, I would think the
    fuel consumption would be horrible.

I still love SUs for sheer simplicity and function, but FI has a lot
going for it. My main objection to FI on SOCs and SOBs is the spares
situation when the more specialised bits go breaky.

  11. Never = rarely. And with what you save in fuel it more than pays for
    itself.

Cab's use of English is unlcear at this point, is he saying "fewer
    times" or "less often"? ;-)

  14. Old airheads are/were light and torquey, so the lack of absolute bhp
    never bothered me.

The fuel economy did. The later they got, the more fuel they drank. My
old heavy-flywheel R100RS was excellent: high-40s most of the time. I
remember the light-flywheel R65LS did 45mpg whether I was caning it or
nursing it along. My late Monolever R80 struggled to better 40mpg.

I think all the anti-emissions stuff just choked them into inefficiency.

The key to reliability is electronic FI doesn't get tampered with by
monkeys when the vehicle is "serviced" by the dealer.

You want to try a Wal Phillips fuel injector. It's probably quite
reliable being basically a gravity fed tap and butterfly throttle on a
bit of inlet tract. But mixture is so messed up that it's really only
fit for use on speedway/grasstrack using methanol which can tolerate
    very rich "safe" mixtures.

Why bother? It's still way down on power. Just get a LET and crank up
    the boost.

Nissan's turbo motors can all take double the makers rated power on
    stock internals.
    Supra will go to triple.

GM USA have issued a set of notes on how to get 800bhp from an Ecotec
with big turbo. The key mods are lube system.

The first thing to do with an R100 mono is swap the carbs

  18. Ditto. Especially with the R100 barrels/pistons/heads/carbs fitted.
Ditto. Ex N.Wales Plod. I really liked the narrow Plod panniers.
Mine never had a problem, but the alternator was a bit marginal with any
    extra lighting.

  19. Ah well, the later airheads didn't do too well on fuel consumption,
which was a surprise to me, as mine (R7 80RT converted to R100)
    regularly averaged 50mpg.
