Fuel Economy

G'day all. Since Feb this year I've been commuting daily on my Zephyr 750.
Overall, I'm happy with the bike but I'm just a little curious as to what
fuel economy other people on bikes (specifically commuters doing city miles
    on 500-1000cc bikes) are getting.

My Zeph goes 200Kms on 13 litres of liquid gold, or around 6.5 l/100km. My
car (a crappy old Lancer 1.5) gets around 8 l/100km. My wife's 4x4 is up at
    almost 15.

What do other riders typically get?

It's an odd thing, but when I was working afternoons and evenings with
no traffic, I was getting 21km to the litre (4.7 litres per 100 kays).
Now, working days and dealing with lane splitting through slow-moving
peak-hour traffic I get 21km per litre, even though I feel the bike
works a lot harder. The 19.5-litre tank gets me a little over 400km, but
on a 214km daily commute I'm not game to see just how far over 400 if
    it's anywhere shy of 428km.

THe guzzi does 15-16km/l in the rush hour, 17-18 if it gets to stretch
    its legs.

The stop start is what kills the consumption in a big bike, that large
motor has to spin up quickly and chews a lot of juice doing it.

If you want cheap, get a smaller bike...

My GS500 gets 4.3 to 4.6 litres per hundred kilometers in peak hour traffic
in Canberra. I suspect that it would give improved figures on a trip.

I generally got about 260 city kilometers for 20L on my XJ900 and about 280
on my BMW 1100GS so you're doing better than me.

I generally get around 16km/l from the CBR954 and about 16.5km/l for the
SV1000. That's commuting but generally in low traffic volumes.

About 6L/100 on the Aprilia 650 usually.

Quite a lot more in heavy traffic though. (have run out once because of it)

Am getting about 6.5 L/100km commuting to work and just general running
    around.

  10. When we were commuting on the Firestorm, we'd get about 180kms to a
tank, which took roughly 15-16L to fill (even though it's a 19L tank,
    allegedly).

Works out to about 8.5L/100kms. That's with not too much stop-starting
or goosing it up, but with a pillion.

The best I ever rung out of it was 280kms on a tank, but that was
feather-light throttle, and pretty much all highway (Bris to
Maroochydoore, and back again). Can't remember how much it drank after
that little episode, but the reserve light was on for enough time to
start really concerning me towards the end. ~6L/100kms, I guess.

    VTR's, eh???

Thanks to all those who posted a reply. I can assume from all this that
I'm pretty much on the money, especially as my Zeph has an aftermarket
exhaust, bigger jets and a fat bastard on it's back...

Nah, just being obtuse. or showing my age.

Should have been 2 1/2 gallons per hundred miles around town, or
1 2/3 gallons per hundred miles on the highway. :)
