Maybe you dont like them but I get around 70mpg from the GS500.
The big clue is to change up and keep the revs down.
Screaming around at high revs might sound nice but it chews fuel.
I keep it between 3000 and 4500 to cruise and kick it down a notch
or two if I want acceleration.

OTOH it will probably do around 35mpg if hooned.

That equates to a cruising speed of about 55mph, with acceleration a
    granny would tire of.

Bangeromics, when depreciation is directly related to how much fuel is
    left in the tank.

I'm probably going to get a new BMW 118d. According to BMW it'll
return 62mpg on the combined cycle.

Now, in my Fiesta my normal use returns smack on Ford's combined cycle
figure of 38mpg so I expect to be able to get 60 out of the BMW.

The BMW does 0-60 in 7.9 sec's, so it's not exactly slow, and best of
all, it only costs 30 quid a year to tax.

  6. You've had a lot of good advice already and it sounds like you've made
your mind up - but I'll tell you my experience anyway. When I decided
to get back into biking (after 10 years off) I thought that it might
save money for similar reasons to you - small size, low weight, etc.
It became apparent, very quickly, that bikes don't appear to be
designed with fuel economy at the forefront - I guess because that
isn't a concern of most bikers.

The GS500 I had would get 58 mpg ridden reasonably, would overtake
cars easily and was brilliant in traffic. Actually it was a hoot and I
think you should at least consider one - you'd probably get a decent
one for a grand. After a while I gave up on thinking about fuel quite
so much and got a ZR-7. When ridden sensibly it does about 45-50 mpg.
When ridden like a bike it doesn't. I find that, generally, I find it
very difficult to ride sensibly for a whole journey.

    And finally, I don't think I'd fancy taking a pillion on a 125.

heheh, I do get the feeling I'm one of the few people who thinks they
    look ok.

It drives well. Better than the Civic Type-S 2.2 CDTI I also tested.

I'd love to, but at the moment I'm paying about 50 quid a week for
petrol. I want to get a more fuel efficient car, not one that's less.

The bike is for fun, the car for going to work[1].

[1] That said, performance does need to be in the "acceptable"
bracket, hence the requirement for a 0-60 of about 8 secs but also
giving an mpg of over 55.

Eh? I get 28mpg a week for a Discovery 3 auto? Mines mostly round town &
a bit of motorway. That seems very low.

My commute is back lanes, a good chunk of 'em single-track. Lots of loud
pedal, lots of brake, not a lot of cruise.

Oh, and it was a rental, so I didn't really give a ****.

Blimey. Them's cruising revs on the Wing, and that's got a 5500rpm
    redline.

    GL1500 96k miles @ 35mpg = 2,743 gallons, give or take.

    At 110p a litre, that's £13,715.

    It cost £13,500 otr.

So I'm in pocket by over £200, then?

Yebbut I am talking about commute traffic, you are talking about the
open road. Pootling around at 50mph is most of my usual rides, it
can change down to accelerate and wind up to 115mph at 10500 if I feel
    like misbehaving.

My point being that keeping the revs down saves a load of fuel, but of
course people tend to snip out the context.

It's a fucking motorcycle, it's not meant to be for economy it's meant
to be thrashed to within an inch of its life regardless of how much
    fuel it uses.

Seriously? The 1200 has a 7500 redline. Is the 1500 a diesel or something?
