He doesn't really use it much anymore. He recently finished restoring a
Vincent Comet, & uses that most of the time. He's probably going to get
a Tiger to replace the VFR so he can make the most of all the snotty
mountain roads & forest tracks near where he lives.

In reality, you're not going to go that much faster on the 'snotty
mountain roads' on a Tiger than you are on a VFR - the only thing I can
see in the Tiger's favour is visibility - however, if the VFR has ABS,
then I'd take the VFR any day over a Tiger for those gravelly, muddy
roads. A Tiger is also going to be pretty useless on forest tracks. Much
as they present an 'off roader' image, they're not really an off-road
    bike.

It's not about going faster, it's about enjoying the ride. The soft
suspension, steering lock & leverage all make big trailies a lot easier
to ride & more fun on a single track mountain road. Having said that, I
have to disagree about not being much faster on that type of road.
That, with all due respect, is bollox! Tigers are superb on forest
tracks, & perfectly useable on stuff a lot worse. Of course they're not
in the same league as a proper enduro bike, but they're far from
useless; I wouldn't own one if they were!

If I must.... I've taken all sorts of bikes into silly places - last one
I did that kind of 'soft-roading' with was a Divvy 600......

I still wouldn't choose a monster traillie for that kind of thing, as
they're too heavy and tall for my stumpy legs. I can cope with tall, but
not with heavy at the same time.

Fair enough. It's not that I know anything about it, you understand. I just
thought the photos of a Tiger in (allegedly) wholly inappropriate
surroundings was a nice touch. Although, thinking about it, we have no
actual proof it wasn't craned in.

Agree with that 100%, if that's the main reason for having the bike,
hence the XR in my sig. But if you want something you can pop down to
Valencia on one weekend for the GP, explore some of the unclassified
Pyrenean roads on the way back, then go for a blast on the tank tracks
on Salisbury Plain or Welsh forest tracks the following weekend, a big
trailie's your only choice. The weight can be a total bitch off-road
though, & when it starts to go over there's no way I can stop it, being
    a 5'8" weakling :-\

Lol I suppose I went to work with a paintbrush & a bucket of mud before
    taking the photos too ;-)

I may be taking a BBC reporter out trailriding on the pillion soon as
part of the campaign to save greenlanes, so maybe you'll get to see a
Tiger in the wild on TV, unless I drop the bike on him...

  11. Ahem - Mr H...

It was only a couple of weeks ago that you were proclaiming in this
very newsgroup that the VFR wasn't suitable for the small back roads
    where you live...

You were easily convinced that it's fine weren't you?

Not at all. I hate riding those kind of roads on the VFR, and I'm not
convinced a big road-biased traillie would be any better. F650 or
    something would be ideal, though.
