    Pre eBay

New Lindy 8 port Ethernet Switch which I didn't need as it happened.
    Auto-switching, full-duplex and half-duplex modes
Boxed with warranty card and receipt.

Nice boxes these, at least as good as the Netgear fashion items.

    Cost me £55
    Sell for £35 posted

Can you simply use a switch in place of a hub or does it *require* some
    configuration?

It's a Switched Hub, there is no config to do.
Common descriptions of these things have become a little misleading.

Is that better than a non-switched one? IIRC a hub sends all packets to
all devices allowing the devices whereas a switch directs the packets
down just the line to the target device - so it should provide better
performance - is that what you're selling?

  5. My understanding is that a basic hub is as fast as the slowest device
connected, while a switch allows each individual link to be at the speed of
    the connected device.

Good enough description yes. It is a layer 2 device segmenting the network
and learning where the different mac addy's are such that different devices
on a network communicate directly with each other. When networks slow down
it is not usually a limit of volume of necessary traffic being reached but
an excess burden incurred due to poor topology. Good descriptions found at

So is it a hub, or a switch?
