Revs check, I owe about $600 on the car which will be cleared by the last
automatic payment taken from my account on Friday. I figured that no finance
would be owing by the time the Auction ended so I ticked the clear box. My
    mistake.

Yes, it is, in a manner of speaking. The Registry of Encumbered Vehicles
lists, er, encumberences on vehicles. http://www.revs.nsw.gov.au.

In this instance, the registry says "THERE ARE FINANCIAL INTERESTS
RECORDED AGAINST THE SUPPLIED VEHICLE IDENTIFIERS".

That's the NSW version of events. I assume other states have the same
    sort of thing.

The other side of the coin is that in most states you can get a check
done (and pay a small fee) which (assuming the check comes back clear)
guarentees you title to the vehicle.

That way a finance company can't come along later and repossess the
vehicle because someone else didn't pay out the finance.

I do a REVS check before I pay a cent on each vehicle I buy...
