FS: DT50MX

  1. OK, Number One Son is about to graduate to a 125 (on 22 November) and so
his DT50MX is up for grabs.

I bought it about three years ago. It was already in pretty good
condition, albeit being used off-road only. I sorted it out, put it back
on the road, used it a couple of times, and then stashed it in the
garage for when he turned 16.

It's actually (cough) derestricted and has a 65cc big bore kit in it.
It's impossible to tell from looking at it. It does 50mph with my weight
on it, so with a teenager it should comfortably exceed that. It means it
can keep up with the traffic. It also means that it is technically
illegal for a sixteen year-old to use on the road. Please understand
this. However, I have the original 50cc barrel and piston, which I will
throw in with it, for the buyer to reconvert to legal 'moped' status.
I'm sure we understand each other.

It has been utterly reliable in the year he's used it. It starts easily,
revs cleanly and doesn't rattle or rumble. Everything works as it
should: lights, horn, charging system, the works. It's also got nearly
new tyres on it - Continentals, not some made in Sumatra
Ying-Tong-Iddle-I-Po crap. And new front brake shoes. This is my son,
understand, so I've kept it maintained as I would my own bikes, with
proper kit. That includes fully synthetic two-stroke oil, not recycled
    chip fat.

It's got short tax and will have a new MoT on it. The steering head
bearings have just been replaced with taper rollers.

Also supplied with are a few useful spares, besides the barrel and
piston. I think I've got some gaskets. There's the original owner's
handbook, and even a period Yamaha brochure!

It's got the inevitable few scrapes, scratches and stone chips that any
seventeen year-old bike (never mind a sixteener special!) accumulates.
But it is very, very tidy and all the paint is original. Oh, except for
the silver paint on the swinging arm. I took that out when I fitted new
swinging arm bushes a year ago, stripped off all the paint, and
resprayed it, in silver, as per original. It's a damn fine job, though I
    say it myself.

Plenty of ukrm-ers have seen this bike and can vouch for the fact that
    it's in excellent nick.

Price? Well, it's going on Ebay soon for £399. I estimate it'll make
about £450 - DT50MXs are in huge demand. To any ukrmer who has a teen
son who needs transport: £425. SW London area.

  2. That goes without saying...

Obbike: Can't remember the last time I saw a DT50MX on the road.

  4. On Sun, 29 Oct 2006 12:50:17 +0000,
How much was his insurance? Obviously it will only be a rough guide,
as area will make a difference, but it will give a guideline. Any
recommendations for quotes? Son can afford to buy it, but says
insuring it will clear him out and I'm not gullible enough to fall for
the blatant ploy and do it for him. He really wants a fizzy but then
he saw how much they were going for.

Oh and I snipped the last bit, but 'teen son', tut tut, DT50 was my
first ride all those years ago.

You're missing the obvious difference between you and TOG.
