Unless you go to a Scottish bank, of course. And I believe that
they're legal tender throughout the UK too, although how easily one
would be accepted south of the border I don't know.

Only Bank of England banknotes are "legal tender" in England and
    Wales.

Scottish notes are useable only at the agreement of both parties to
    the transaction.

    Do we have £100 notes?[/QUOTE]

    <shrug>

The point being the highest denomination notes available, hence as few
notes as possible, easier to carry around.

Aha, I knew I remembered seeing them somewhere. I got a load out of the
bank in Carlisle when buying a car.

So Salad, how many scottish £100 notes you want to sell me? I'll give
you £10 each, after having a bank check them of course.

  6. That said: how do you know? There might be hundreds of transactions like
that every week in the car trading world.

On this very group, the perceived wisdom when getting paid for a bike is
to insist on cash, or a bank draft, or being down the bank.

Maybe not the norm, but not as rare as you might think, I'll wager.

Well, I don't, hence "I don't consider it the norm", its IMO.
Paying for anything by cash is fine, I just can't figure out any
logical reason that they'd travel with 1000 £10 notes when they could
have 200 £50s or 100 £100s (Scottish of course)? Even if I was paid
(for the sale of something else) in £10s I'd change them, if for
nothing else but convenience, I'd hate to have to carry round a huge
    wad (fnar fnar, etc)
It obviously happens, because it did :)
