    Fat chance. Try £5000.

Whilst £6250 might be *tad* high for a private sale, looking on
AutoTrader there are only two at < £6000 and the next cheapest at £6250
is a 9000 mile 2005 model (although they are all trade).

Of course, there's no guarantee that they sell at these initial asking
    prices...

I bet they don't (he says, still smarting from the hit he took on his
    Sprint ST).

Hm. Let's have a look at Ebay's completed auctions, then.

Holy Christ! Even worse than I thought:

2007 model, £6.1k, failed to meet reserve.

2005 model, £5.2k, failed to meet reserve.

2005 model, 4600 miles only, £4.6k, failed to meet reserve.

Loads of 2002 and 2003 models, all failing to make reserve. The only
one that did sell was a 7000-mile 2003 model which struggled to £3.1k

And then you're down to 1990s models which go from a grand upwards. I
have a feeling that all these prices are way, way below book.

For a nice '06 model, then, you could be down to £4500-5000. Good news
    if you're buying.

I suppose that a franchised Triumph dealer might ask and get
substantially more, but for a private sale, that £6250 could be as
much as £1500 on the high side.

Have you ever seen any stats of how many MCN ads have sold in (say) 2 weeks
after the first ad? I have £20 here says that its a rather small
percentage. In part because it's a useless rag, in part because people ask
over what the market will bear.

Depreciation on most new bikes is savage. To actually get a bike resold
privately in the current market I would allow for 25% per annum for 3 years,
if you put some miles on it.

    So your £9000 Kwak 1400GTR will equate to 1 - £6750 2 - £5062 3 - £3796
Tailing off more gradually once it has bottomed out at the £3500 mark.

Sure, a dealer will get more, the very occasional lucky private buyer will
do a touch better, but for most and for those who want a quick sale....
    there it is.

That Ducati in my sig had dropped 61% of it's value in 4 years and 26000
miles and he was one of the lucky sellers, he found me wanting one living
locally and they are scarce in the market.

  7. I think that's true to a certain extent, but equally, I've sold some
bikes on Ebay for way more than I thought they'd fetch. Ebay has its
    off-days and good days.

But Ebay's "completed auctions" search is still he best indicator you'll
get of what things have actually sold for.

.... which, strangely enough, happens to co-incide with the write down
you get on a company bike.

    I wonder why.

Well indeed because with decent work mileage you will write off the entire
    value in 3 years!
