    you know...

All they have to do is make it an ADR rule that all new bikes sold in
Aust must have provision for a front number plate design and it the
    importers and Manufactures problem.

it will take a while to filter through, just like seat belts years ago

As far as I know, ADRs are different mob to the ones pushing for FNP.

The ADRs are federal and would want a full safety justification,
especially as the manufacturers would tell them to get lost.

The FNP is being pushed by Victorian State govt who forgot about bikes
when they installed all their speed cameras, and forgot about them
    when they opened their tollroads.

There is also the problem of one of the main proponents of this is
linked to people who sell speed cameras...

Even if they pulled off an ADR, it would only affect a very small
percentage of the bike fleet for years and years.

Just how big do you think this market is?

And you miss the bit up there about different mobs. And different
    agendas.
No, it is because only a small number of new bikes are bought every
    year.
Probably. Although given how many there are in Vic, maybe not.

admittedly their biggest seller is the CT100 and they could probably
    do plates for that.

Mounting them on the sportbikes wouldn't work. Cruisers would also
look wrong. Why would Honda bother with the Oz market if they lose
    3/4 of it?

Basically the ADR people have no *reason* to do it. It wouldn't do
what the Vics want, hence the Vics aren't arguing for it.

And they have no leverage on the feds for a safety argument.

The issue is dead in the water.
the mob that was asked to compile the report had to more or less "go the
motion" and they don't believe it will actually take place due to the
    very large disparity between bikes.
It was commissioned in victoria but the findings implications were to be
    Australia wide.
From Tony E MRAA: following a meeting with the Victorian minister.

'We had our meeting today with the Minister - I'm becoming more
    optimistic about a good outcome.

One thing is that he took on board the comments we had about the poor
engineering - and the comment from the MCCNSW about them needing to be
professionally fitted to avoid warrant/safety issues. We also made the
point that motorcyclists cannot be expected to pay for this.

It does appear that the ACT have totally rejected FNP's. SA & TAS are
less than enthusiastic and Victoria is probably leaning towards the
negative (hard to tell yet). NSW is enthusiastic about them...

I also pointed out that the RIS mentioned that there weren't any big
issues for business. They forgot to mention some of the larger users -
    Australia Post and the military...

About 10,000 motorcycles in total. Postie bikes would need special
fittings and the estimate is around $1 million to develop test
manufacture and install suitable FNPs. If they can forget about
Australia Post, what else can they forget?

I'll post more stuff as I can. There is more stuff coming up.

Heh. and isn't it funny that the NSW govt says the opposite? They
don't care and the Vics do?

My understanding is that the Vic lot are driving this, with help from some
NSW people (non-govt) who have rather a strong connection to companies
    that sell speed cameras.

As to dead in the water, that's what we thought last time. THere's a
shedload of revenue (they think) riding on this. This time around it
was brought in as sneakily as possible.

All motorcycles would need "Special fitting", and as Aust Post almost
exclusively use a single model which would probably be very easily
retrofitted with a front number plate I think you're way off the money
    there.

Front numberplates on Ferraris, Lambos and lots of other cars "look
wrong", but they seem to manage to fit them ok.

    Eh?!!?
Sure some of these cars have smaller 'plate mounts than a standard
Australian plate but all are designed to carry a front plate (as far as I'm
    aware).
About zero currently available bikes are designed to have a front plate.

I believe that front plate mounts actually *are* available for Enfields!

So that would be one currently available bike was designed to have a
    front plate.

Of course it was designed for a lengthways along the guard plate (back
in the 50's) which wouldn't meet the proposed standard... but lets not
    be picky ok :)

  18. Ask them if they would like to contribute an extra $50 to the Government for
registration fees as we have to do in Victoria
Bet they would change their tune then

Sorry to get picky, but the 2006 model Indian Enfield which I rode last
year had no such mounting points for a lengthways numberplate on the
    front guard.
